The number of adults with Covid infections in Michigan hospitals has declined by more than 2,000 over the past four weeks.
State data posted Thursday shows 2,158 hospitalized patients with confirmed or suspected coronavirus -- down 48% from April 14, when 4,187 beds held virus victims.
Intensive care units, which had 864 Covid cases in mid-April, were treating 613 as of Thursday afternoon's tally from the Department of Health and Human Services. That's a 29% drop.
Deadline Detroit compared figures for April 14 with the latest update. Weekly data shows the number of in-patients with confirmed or suspected Covid, the number in intensive care and overall bed occupancy rates at every Michigan hospital.

Michigan coronavirus data for Monday, April 19: Two hopeful signs in the numbers

Michigan coronavirus data for Monday, April 19: Two hopeful signs in the numbers

After weeks of unnerving increases in new coronavirus cases and positivity rates in Michigan, there are a couple signs the numbers may be cresting.
The most hopeful sign: The statewide positivity rate on coronavirus diagnostic tests is dropping. It was 12.1% for test results reported Friday, April 16, with a seven-day average of 14.3%. The former was the lowest one-day rate since March 26, and the latter was the lowest since April 1.
The number of daily new cases also seems to be plateauing: The seven-day average rose only 2.8% last week, April 11-17, compared to the week before. And that increase is largely explained by a spike in testing:There were 22% more coronavirus tests performed last week (an average of 51,271 a day) compared to the previous seven days (41,960 daily average).

First COVID-19 vaccinations given at Ascension Providence in Novi

He took the first, a COVID-19 vaccination, in his right arm shortly before 2 p.m.
The second will be a shot of whiskey at home in West Bloomfield tonight as he celebrates being the first person immunized at Ascension Providence Hospital in Novi.
Shuker, an internal medicine physician, has not taken a day off work since mid-March, seeing COVID-19 patients daily. He said the vaccination represents the beginning of the end of the pandemic.
"We have lost a lot of lives. People have lost family, friends, parents," Shuker said. "I have made too many phone calls, I have dreaded picking up the phone. I had to do one today. This shot is an important step for humanity to put this disease to an end... It is safe. What is not safe is getting exposed to COVID."
