Indonesia, home to the world's third-largest tropical rainforests, has been successful in significantly reducing the number of forest fire cases over the last several years, and steps must be taken to maintain this achievement.
Forest fire incidents in 2020 declined by some 82 percent from that during the previous year, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD stated.
The number of forest and land fires declined drastically over several years. In 2015, forest and land fires had ravaged 2,610 thousand hectares of land, and the figure dropped to 1,592,010 hectares in 2019 and 296,942 hectares in 2020.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) urged the Ministry of Agriculture to complete preparations for food estate development in North Sumatra and Central Kalimantan by 2021.
In his opening remarks during a national working meeting on the 2021 Agriculture Development at the State Palace here on Monday, the head of state was sanguine that other provinces would emulate the food estates in North Sumatra and Central Kalimantan.
In Central Kalimantan, the food estate is planned to be located in Kapuas District and Pulau Pisau, spanning an area totaling some 164.6 thousand hectares. Rice planting is planned on the land that was earlier a peatland project area.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has asked the Ministry of Agriculture to come up with a solution to reduce Indonesia’s dependence on imports of food commodities, such as garlic, sugar, corn, and soybeans.
"I have asked that the issues regarding these items must be resolved -- on garlic, sugar, corn, soybeans, and other commodities that are still imported. These should be noted and designed well in order for us to immediately overcome the challenge," said President Widodo at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday.
