Godzilla Vs. Kong ($80.5 million domestic and $390 million worldwide), Warner Bros.’ next would-be theatrical savior (relatively speaking) continued its slow global roll.
Mortal Kombat, an over/under $95 million R-rated adaptation of the popular and long-running video game series, earned another $5.7 million from 6,128 screens in 28 markets. That brings its global cume to $19.2 million, including $9.6 million in Russia. The James Wan-produced and Simon McQuoid-directed action fantasy opens in North America this Friday, and it damn-well better contain both babalities and friendships! Don’t save that gold for the sequel, give the fans what they want in the first movie!

Eros Now, the streaming service operated by Eros STX Global, competes in a crowded and fast-evolving Indian OTT market. Ali Hussein, the company’s CEO will be in conversation with
Variety’s Asia editor Patrick Frater, on the first day of Hong Kong FilMart. Before that, Hussein gives a taste of things to come.
How would you sketch out the company for non-India users?
Eros Now has established a leading position in the global OTT market with over 211.5 million registered users and 36.2 million paying subscribers. The premium platform offers a wide range of entertainment content across format and genres in 10 different languages. It is primarily an SVOD service with subscribers from across 150 countries and among the only Indian entity to have distribution partnerships with the likes of Apple Plus, IQIYI amongst others. The legacy and strong hold of the service is with Indian films from over the years and with original series launched on the platform since 2018.

Actor and producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas (“The White Tiger”) and singer, songwriter and actor Nick Jonas will announce the Academy Award nominations in all 23 categories in a two-part live presentation on Monday, March 15, the Academy announced today.
This will be conducted via global live stream on Oscars.com, Oscars.org and the Academy’s digital platforms – Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Films such as Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland,” Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” are expected to receive many nominations from the Academy. In a year that was ravaged by a global pandemic, streamers and PVOD came to the consumer’s aid, with films debuting and releasing on multiple platforms.

It’s a very different landscape this week than it was a year ago, just before the pandemic forced cinemas to close around the country. Still, with New York cinemas cautiously reopening this week and many other markets determined to bring moviegoing back, the studios and indie distributors alike are bringing many of their long-delayed releases onto screens, albeit in an entirely new way. 
For contrasting examples, look at how two of the majors are handling what were intended to be family film tentpoles: Paramount decided to bypass theaters entirely with “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” using the title to launch its new subscription service, Paramount Plus (audiences can also rent it, at a price of $19.99, for a limited time via PVOD platforms). Disney tested a similar approach with “Mulan” late last summer, and now unveils its latest animated princess movie, “Raya and the Last Dragon” — though that label disguises the many ways in which this one advances the formula — both in theaters and via Disney Plus (where it can be rented for a premium surcharge).
