The external affairs ministry said that all legal options would be explored, and the matter would be taken up with Qatar. “We are deeply shocked by the verdict of death penalty and are awaiting the detailed judgement. A report in ‘The Tribune’ said that the eight veterans have been accused of spying for Israel and could be sentenced to death.

The Indian government has been unable to get back the former officers who have been held in Qatar for seven months and are about to be charged by Doha.

Eight naval veterans from India who were working for a private firm were picked up on August 30 by officials of Qatar’s interior ministry. They have been in solitary confinement since then.
