The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) late Wednesday authorized rapid tests from two companies in a major step forward for the availability of at-home COVID-19 testing.
The authorizations of the Quidel QuickVue and Abbott BinaxNOW tests will allow people to swab themselves at home and get results in minutes. The Quidel test delivers results in 10 minutes and the Abbott test requires 15 minutes.
While the FDA has previously taken some steps toward authorizing at-home tests, advocates hailed the new authorizations as a major breakthrough because the tests are simple, do not require a prescription and can be mass-produced by two major companies to be widely available.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. health officials have authorized two more over-the-counter COVID-19 tests that can be used at home to get rapid results.
The move by the Food and Drug Administration is expected to vastly expand the availability of cheap home tests that many experts have advocated since the early days of the outbreak. The announcement late Wednesday comes as U.S. testing numbers continue to slide, even as the number of new coronavirus infections is rising again.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego company just got emergency authorization from the Food and Drug Administration to sell a self-test for COVID-19 that returns results in 10 minutes, entirely from home.
Initially, the QuickVue At-Home COVID-19 Test from Quidel Corporation will only be available with a doctor’s prescription, but the company will pursue a second authorization in the coming months to sell the test over-the-counter, according to CEO Douglas Bryant.
