TIRUPATI: A month ago, the Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) personnel arrested a few Karnataka-based youngsters when they were carrying hay bundles on two-wheelers at Mamadugu located close to the Andhra Pradesh-Karnataka border. The arrests were made as the officials of SEB found two cases of Indian Made Liquor (IML) bottles, hidden in the hay bundles. The youngsters were smuggling liquor from Karnataka to make easy money in Andhra Pradesh.

As government and private schools are racing to complete the syllabus for Class X, the incidence of COVID-19 cases among students of some schools in the western mandals has become a concern for teachers and parents as well.
Chittoor district has been witnessing an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases during the last month, with a daily average of 40. After over 50 teachers and students at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) administered Veda Patashala tested positive to the virus a few days ago, it’s the turn of the schools in Palamaner, including a private institution.

Five boys studying in Class X at the Zilla Parishad Government Boys’ High School at Ramasamudram mandal headquarters have tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday. All boys are residents of Ramasamudram, 70 km from here.
District Educational Officer N. Narasimha Reddy said the boys were advised to be under home quarantine.
“As the Sankranti holidays will be till January 18, the threat of other students getting infected does not arise. We are taking all steps to test suspected cases among all students,” the official said.
During the last fortnight, Chittoor district has been recording fewer COVID-19 cases. While a majority of them are concentrated in Tirupati and Chittoor municipalities, the rest of the district is considered free of the virus. At this stage, five boys simultaneously testing positive for the virus led to a flutter in the western mandals, which are along the border with Karnataka.
