Spinal bifida is a neural tube birth defect in which the spinal cord and spine don't develop properly. Researchers conducted a clinical trial to investigate whether a patch made of umbilical cord placed on the spinal bifida defect after a minimally invasive fetoscopic surgery can improve healing.
The research was conducted at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).
Currently, patients are enrolled at The Fetal Center affiliated with Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, and UT Physicians.

The news hit Margarita Saavedra so hard that she fainted in her doctor’s office.
Eighteen weeks into her pregnancy, an ultrasound found the fetus could not survive because of a deadly birth defect. The same imaging test also discovered she had developed placenta accreta, a serious complication that usually leads to a hysterectomy to prevent life-threatening bleeding. If doctors proceeded, she could have no more babies.
“It was so traumatic for me,” Saavedra, 40, who lives in Houston, Texas, told TODAY. “It was just shock.”
Five years later, she still grieves for the baby she lost then. But she rejoices at the birth of Federico, the son she delivered after choosing conservative management — a newer, rarer option to treat placenta accreta that kept her uterus in place.

Researchers are investigating whether a human umbilical cord patch placed on the spina bifida defect could improve healing after minimally invasive fetoscopic surgery in a clinical trial at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).
Patients are being enrolled at The Fetal Center affiliated with Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, and UT Physicians.
The study is for pregnant patients whose babies have a neural tube defect, myelomeningocele, in which a sac of fluid containing the spinal cord and nerves protrudes through an opening in the baby's back. The condition can cause severe and lifelong disabilities, such as difficulty walking and going to the bathroom.
