Gauchos Win First-Ever Big West Championship Title in Successful Season

Even with a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Hawai’i in the NCAA Tournament semifinals that saw their incredible run come to an end, the UC Santa Barbara men’s volleyball team had a year to remember, as they had one of the most successful seasons in program history as winners of the Big West Championship for the first time in school history. 
The Gauchos finished the regular season holding the No. 2 seed in the Big West rankings with a 13-4 record, while only losing three conference games the entire season. UCSB continued their success into the postseason, defeating Long Beach State and UC San Diego en route to the Big West Championship. The Gauchos had one more victory in the tank as they defeated Pepperdine 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to their conference rival and eventual NCAA champion Hawai’i.

Randy DeWeese was the lone Gaucho to post double-figure kills with 13 on .207 hitting. Keenan Sanders had eight kills and Roy McFarland seven.
"The guys always follow the game plan so well and we had a good one today, utilizing our serve-block defense," McLaughlin said. "If we could've served better it would've made the match closer, but we touched a lot of balls and dug a lot of balls, and I think if we had sided-out better we could've won."
The first set was tied at 18-18, but a three-man Hawaii block sparked a 5-1 run. Guilherme Voss and Parapunov finished the set for Hawaii with a block on McFarland.

PROVO — In its first match since clinching the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title April 24, BYU men's volleyball wasted little time putting MIVA champion Lewis on its heels.
The third-ranked Flyers wasted little time counter-punching No. 2 BYU.
Then, Gabi Garcia Fernandez wasted little time doing Gabi Garcia Fernandez things.
With hitting for speed, power, or simply touch, the Puerto Rican international was too much for the best of the midwest.
Garcia Fernandez poured in 17 kills, seven digs, two aces and two blocks, and BYU held the Flyers below .300 hitting en route to a 25-22, 25-15, 26-28, 25-20 Thursday in the NCAA Tournament semifinals at the Covelli Center in Columbus, Ohio.

UCSB came out firing in its first NCAA Men’s Volleyball Tournament appearance in 10 years.
The third-seeded Gauchos hit .567 in the first set against Pepperdine and outlasted the Waves in four sets, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 28-26 on Tuesday in a quarterfinal match in Columbus, Ohio.

With two 3-1 wins in the Big West Tournament against Long Beach State University and UC San Diego, the UC Santa Barbara men’s volleyball team won their first-ever Big West Championship and clinched a berth in the NCAA men’s volleyball tournament.
This will be the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2011 and marks one of the greatest seasons of in-conference play in UCSB history. After a successful regular season that saw the Gauchos finish 13-4, UCSB breezed by their first tournament opponent, Long Beach State, who had to defeat UC Irvine to move onto the semifinals. However, the championship game was not as easy as the semifinals as UCSD kept it close until the deciding point.

UCSB Men's Volleyball Wins Big West, Earns NCAA Tournament Berth |

Second-seeded UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball became Big West Champions for the first time Saturday night, defeating fourth-seeded UC San Diego in four sets, 22-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-20, on Saturday night in Honolulu. 
The Gauchos (15-4) earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament at Ohio State, May 3-8.  They'll face Pepperdine (13-6) on May 4. The winner advances to the semifinals to face No. 1 seed Hawaii (15-1) on May 6. Pepperdine and Hawaii received the two at-large berths in the tournament.
BYU (19-3) is the No. 2 seed. In the semifinals, the Cougars play the winner of Lewis (20-2) against the survivor of the play-in match between Penn State (21-3) and Belmont Abbey (15-7) on May 3.

No.18 Gauchos Take First Two Games Against Tritons

The UC Santa Barbara men’s volleyball team extended their winning streak to seven games as they took the first two matches of a three-game set against the UC San Diego Tritons 3-2 and 3-0, respectively. These matches were held last Wednesday and Thursday in San Diego and the Gauchos will look to complete the series sweep at the Thunderdome this Saturday to finish off the regular season. 
This away sweep by the Gauchos shows both teams’ direction as the two programs look to prepare for the Big West Tournament. The Gauchos, the No. 18 team in the country, improved to 12-4 with the two victories, while the Tritons have lost their fourth straight and stands at 3-11.

Ryan Wilcox led the team with nine total digs and an outstanding five aces to go along with his double-digit kill performance of 11. Casey McGarry paced the team with 45 assists. 
With their backs against the wall, the Gauchos rose to occasion in the fourth set. Despite getting out-hit by the Tritons, UCSB used four aces to extend its turn at the service line and build quick runs in the early going. In a blink the nation's third-ranked team was up 9-4 with back-to-back aces by Wilcox drawing a Triton timeout. Bouncing back was the host team, which ended up with a late 21-18 lead, just four points away from the match win.
