Brazil is asking women to delay pregnancy because of a COVID-19 variant

Brazil is asking women to delay pregnancy because of a COVID-19 variant

Officials in Brazil urged women to wait to get pregnant.
A new COVID-19 variant in the country seems to be causing more complications in pregnant people.
In the U.S., officials say that the choice to become pregnant is a personal decision.
The government in Brazil is asking women to consider delaying pregnancy until the country is out of the grips of a spike in COVID cases.
"If possible, postpone the pregnancy a bit to a better time so that [you] can have a more peaceful pregnancy," Secretary of Primary Health Care of the Brazilian health ministry Raphael Camara said in April, according to CNN.

Where will the next COVID hotspots be?

Since its original outbreak in Wuhan we have seen the epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic move from the Far East to Europe and the US and, as wealthier countries vaccinate their way out of their own crises, the epicentre has swung back to hit less developed nations in South Asia.
India
India has seen a rapid and well-publicised increase in COVID cases. After a stepwise easing of restrictions across the country throughout 2020, India’s leader, President Narendra Modi, declared the country was in the “end game” of the pandemic. Soon after this bold statement, large religious and political gatherings were allowed to take place with little regard for social distancing and, inevitably, cases began to soar. On May 3, India hit the grim milestone of 20 million COVID cases, though the true number is thought to be much higher.

Brazil’s health ministry has asked women to avoid becoming pregnant “until a better moment” as the country’s health system buckles under the strain of the Covid pandemic.
Officials said the recommendation was partly due to the stress on the health system but also because the more contagious Brazilian variant known as P1 – currently ravaging the country – appears to affect expectant mothers more than earlier versions of coronavirus.

Coronavirus digest: J&J vaccine maker rejects blood clot claims | News | DW

COVID-19 Special: Tough choices – choosing the right vaccine
J&J scientists wrote in a letter in the
New England Journal of Medicine that "evidence is insufficient to establish a causal relationship between these events" and this type of vaccine.
They argued that while both jabs followed the same technology, they coded different types of protein to the cells, concluding that "the two adenoviral vector COVID-19 vaccines may have quite different biologic effects."
Their letter came in response to an earlier report published by the University of Nebraska, which stated that the rare blood clots "could be related to adenoviral vector vaccines."

COVID-19: Brazil asks women to postpone pregnancy 'if possible'

SAO PAULO – The Brazilian Health Ministry on Friday asked women, ‘if possible’, to postpone the decision to become pregnant.
According to Anadolu Agency, the statement was made by the Ministry’s Primary Health Care secretary, Raphael Parente, amid a worsening of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“If possible, [postpone] the pregnancy a little bit, until a better moment, when you can have your pregnancy more calmly,” Parente said. “We know that at the time of Zika, during one or two years there was a decrease in pregnancies in Brazil, and then it increased back again”.
In the midst of a severe Zika outbreak in Brazil between 2015 and 2016, women considering having children in the period postponed plans for fear that babies would be born with microcephaly.
