Some were arrested near polling stations with millions of shillings inside their cars.
Some were seen harassing and humiliating female officials of the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The ink was hardly dry on last week’s column on political immorality being the greatest threat to the Kenyan nation-state before the truth of that assertion was witnessed during recent ward and constituency by-elections.

Ruto Holds Crisis Meeting as Allies Plan Defection

Deputy President William Ruto held a crisis meeting with his allies on Monday, March 23, over a looming fallout and rebellion within his camp.
Insiders said that the DP learnt of a planned mass defection of MPs and Senators allied to him, and a possible collapse of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The politicians are shifting base to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga's camps, with the two leaders keen on locking Ruto out of the 2022 race.

The fate of Deputy President William Ruto as Jubilee Party deputy leader now lies with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
This after the National Management Committee (NMC) made the bold decision to remove Ruto as the party’s deputy leader and forwarded the decision to the National Executive Council (NEC) chaired by the president.
Uhuru’s allies in Jubilee have accused Ruto of sabotage and faulted his association with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), an affiliate party of Jubilee.

Don't take political sides, DP Ruto tells police, judiciary

Deputy President William Ruto has cautioned the National Police Service and the Judiciary against being partisan while discharging their duties.
Speaking in Bahati, Nakuru County, on Thursday during the burial of Arthur Kimani, son of area MP Kimani Ngunjiri, Ruto (
pictured) said the biggest threat to the country’s peace was a partisan police service.
“The biggest threat to our country is a partisan police service or a police service that listens to political interests,” he said.
The DP said the government had provided the Police Service with the necessary equipment and personnel to discharge their duties independently and hence must follow the law in doing so.

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala surrendered himself to Kakamega Central Police station this morning to forestall earlier plans to have him arrested.
Malala, who arrived at the police station moments before 9.30 am, had indicated that he would present himself to record a statement over the chaos the rocked Matungu parliamentary by-election on Thursday last week.
The lawmaker was captured on video at a polling station confronting ODM leaders including Homabay Woman representative Gladys Wanga at Bulimbo Primary School tallying centre.
Amani National Congress candidate Peter Oscar Nabulindo clinched the seat followed closely by ODM’s David Aoko Were with United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Alex Lanya finishing a distant third.

Homa Bay Woman Rep Gladys Wanga wants the electoral agency to take legal action against politicians who committed electoral offences during Thursday’s by-elections.
Wanga said violence witnessed during the by-elections may plunge Kenya into lawlessness in the 2022 General Election.
The Woman Rep told the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to deal with those who perpetrated the vice.
Violence was witnessed during the elections conducted in Kakamega, Bungoma and Kisii counties.

Parties unleash top guns for homestretch impact

Major political parties have unleashed their top guns in Matungu and Kabuchai constituencies as campaigns for the by-elections enter the homestretch.
Top party officials and MPs from Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Ford Kenya, Amani National Congress (ANC) and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have pitched tent in the two constituencies to drum up support for their candidates ahead of the Thursday polls.
Matungu and Kabuchai seats fell vacant following the deaths of MPs Justus Murunga in November and James Mukwe Lusweti in December.

Why Kabuchai and Matungu mini polls crucial for top rivals

The candidates in the by-elections have been thrown to the periphery, with focus shifting to political party leaders.
