Chinese smartphone vendor Realme announced it had shipped 200 million units since launching in 2018, making it the fifth largest vendor according to Counterpoint Research.
As India pursues an export-driven growth strategy in the electronics sector, the government has expressed growing concern over the minimal contribution of Chinese mobile phone brands to exports, despite dominating the domestic market. While Chinese firms like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Realme command a 74% share in the Indian mobile phone market by volume, their export share is only 4%.
"We came into existence when there were over 700 smartphone brands in the world," said Xu Qi, Realme's chief marketing officer. "We are extremely proud that we have been able to be in the world's top 10 brands for the past five years."
Data from market analytics firm Counterpoint Research shows that only four companies - Vivo, Huawei, Samsung and Apple - have taken less time to ship the same number of units. In total, just 14 companies globally which have shipped over 200 million phones to date.
