Percy Vs Goliath - Screening on the Rialto Channel

Percy Schmeiser (Christopher Walken), a third-generation farmer, gets sued by a corporate giant for allegedly using their patented seeds. With little resources to fight a legal battle, Percy joins forces with up-and-coming attorney Jackson Weaver (Zach Braff) and environmental activist Rebecca Salcau (Christina Ricci) for a monumental case that leads all the way to the Supreme Court.

Oh wait. It’s not “scene stealer,” it’s SEED stealer. They’re calling Walken’s Percy Schmeiser a “seed stealer,” which is about the worst thing you can say about a farmer and can lead to lawsuits and financial ruin and shame and scandal.

Based on a true story and firmly in “Erin Brockovich” territory, “Percy vs. Goliath” is the fictionalized story of an old-fashioned Canadian farmer who has been working the family land for 50 years — like his father and his father’s father and his father’s father’s father did before him — but sees his life turned upside down when he’s sued by the giant Monsanto Co. for allegedly using its patented, pesticide-resistant seeds without remuneration. Percy says those seeds must have blown onto his land from nearby farms, as seeds have done for millennia; Monsanto says it doesn’t matter HOW the seeds got there, and off to court (after court after court) we go.

There is a saying: if you are not a socialist when you are 18, you have no heart. If you are a socialist when you are 40, you have no brain. This sound like it could be a motto of the Republican Party, though the GOP would not likely use the first half of the statement but, instead, would be all for capitalism and the big guys. Nonetheless, even Republicans age 40 would feel a tug on their heart-strings watching a hard-working farmer whose land was in his family since the days of the Austrian Empire, now threatened with a loss of everything: the house, the farm, and if he had one, a dog. (Wait: I take that back about Republicans over 40.) In this true case which has been fictionalized for dramatic effects, Christopher Walker takes the lead role as Percy Schmeiser who lives with his encouraging wife Louise (Roberta Maxwell), receives notice in his home in the small town of Bruno, Saskatchewan (filmed in Manitoba) that the giant agri-business Monsanto is suing him. What? A multi-billion dollar company needs to bankrupt the poor guy because it feels offended by his using a patented seed without Monsanto’s license?
