Red Sonja: Hannah John-Kamen takes leading role in new big-screen fantasy


The new 
Red Sonja movie has found its star. Hannah John-Kamen, best-known to genre fans for her breakout work in SYFY's 
Killjoys and her roles in films like 
Ready Player One and 
Ant-Man and the Wasp, has been cast as the lead in the upcoming reboot of the sword and sorcery heroine's film adventures, according to
“Hannah is a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she IS Red Sonja,” director Joey Soloway said in a statement. “Her range, sensibilities and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together.”

Then came the character with which he'd most frequently be associated throughout his career. Thorne began drawing Red Sonja, an offshoot of Marvel's 
Conan the Barbarian success, in 
Marvel Feature #2 in 1976, following the legendary Dick Giordano's early work on the character. He then followed Sonja over to her own self-titled series alongside writers Roy Thomas and Clara Noto, and continued working on the character for much of the rest of the decade. As Multiversity notes, he would later describe his time on 
Red Sonja as an experience that opened up his desire to draw beautiful, often sexualized, warrior women in fantasy stories, something he'd embrace through more adult-oriented work later in his career.
