(Photo from Eastmincom) DAVAO CITY - The Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) on Friday thanked all the "good samaritans" who channeled their donations through the military command to help the survivors of Typhoon Odette in various parts of Eastern Mindanao. Eastmincom said in a statement Friday, that through its disaster response-focused unit dubbed as Joint Task Force (JTF) Sambisig, more donations were poured in for the typhoon victims. LtGen. Greg Almerol, commander of the Eastmincom, thanked the various organizations, companies, and families for their generosity and compassion for the people who were struck by Typhoon Odette and continues to urge others to exhibit the spirit of giving by donating through the "Tulong Bayanihan para sa Sambayanan" program. "Many of our countrymen were robbed of their homes but through your support and donations, we can help typhoon survivors rise above the challenge a little kindness at a time with newly-restored and resilient homes and a renewed hope for the future," he said. He added that the Eastmincom continues to utilize its air, naval, and land assets to efficiently transport relief goods and construction materials that were dropped by various organizations and private individuals at its Headquarters in Naval Station Felix Apolinario, Panacan in this city to typhoon-hit areas. Almerol bared that Eastmincom troops under the 52nd Engineer Brigade also helped in the rehabilitation of homes and other buildings that were destroyed by the typhoon, including the construction of temporary shelters for typhoon survivors. The Eastmincom's medical teams under the JTF Sambisig's Task Force Kalusugan also utilized the naval asset BRP Ang Pangulo, which was converted into a floating hospital to cater to the medical needs of the typhoon survivors in Surigao City, Siargao Island, and Dinagat Islands. The JTF Sambisig also continues to provide feeding programs, free haircuts, free medicines and supplements, set up charging stations, and administer psychological first aid, art therapy for children, free medical consultations, and wound suturing for the people. "Troops also continue to ferry stranded foreign and local tourists to help them travel back to their homes safe and sound," Almerol added. Almerol also lauded the efforts of the troops and the benevolent donors for their strong determination to help typhoon survivors recover from the devastation caused by super typhoon Odette, stressing further that 'a little kindness and compassion could go a long way.' DUTERTE LEGACY. Residents in Barangay Hacienda in Bugallon, Pangasinan receive different relief assistance and services from national government agencies and the local government on Thursday (Oct. 21, 2021). (PNA photo by Hilda Austria) BUGALLON, Pangasinan - Over 100 indigent residents of Barangay Hacienda here received relief assistance and services during the Duterte Legacy Barangayanihan Caravan on Thursday. In an interview, Pangasinan Police Provincial Office information officer Maj. Arturo Melchor Jr. said different national government agencies and the local government unit came together to bring the frontline services of the government to the barangay. "We wanted to send a message that despite the pandemic, the government is here for the people," he said. The local police catered to the issuance of police clearance and distributed food packs to the beneficiaries. A sitio in the barangay with over 100 indigenous people was a recipient of the Ilocos Police Regional Office's Patubig sa Barangay project that provided a deep well in the area while a farmers' group received a water pump, Melchor said. He added the other national government agencies such as the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority provided free scholarship grants, free haircuts, among others. The Department of Public Works and Highways also distributed rice and the Department of Agriculture gave seeds and seedlings to the beneficiaries. The Philippine Statistics Authority conducted a Step 2 registration for the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) in the barangay. The municipality of Bugallon and the Department of Social Welfare and Development provided food packs. Other agencies involved were the Department of Health, the Department of Interior and Local Government, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bureau of Fire Protection, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, the Philippine Information Agency and the Presidential Communications Operations Office. Raquel Calicdan, one of the beneficiaries, thanked the government agencies for the provisions of goods and services they have received. Calicdan said it is a huge help since her husband has been suffering from stroke for almost four years now. "I only sell native rice cakes to earn for our living. I am part of the Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program as well. I will plant the seeds and seedlings so we could have something to eat when they have already grown," she said. Meanwhile, Mayor Priscilla Espino said they are thankful for this program as well as the many infrastructure projects of the Duterte administration under the 'Build, Build, Build' program. "Some of our villages here got easily flooded come heavy rains and typhoons. But because of the infrastructure projects under 'Build, Build, Build' such flood mitigation projects especially at the Agno River system, we have not been experiencing flooding in some areas for almost two years now," she said.
