2021 Senior Class

Note: The following appears in the Wake Forest football gameday program.Today is the final home game for a senior class that spans four, five and six years. In these unusual times, it is difficult to evaluate senior classes because of the range of signee classes that end up celebrating “Senior Day” together.Today, five “Super Seniors” will run down the Hill for the final time. They have taken advantage of the new four-game redshirt rule and the additional year granted by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Darien Rencher, James Skalski, Will Spiers, Nolan Turner and Regan Upshaw all joined the program in 2016 and have been on teams that have won two national championships, made five College Football Playoffs and captured five ACC titles. They do not have enough fingers to accommodate all the rings. It will be difficult for any group of players to duplicate that list of accomplishments, regardless of the length of their tenure.Eight more players who entered Clemson in 2017 will run down the Hill for the final time today. The players who entered in 2016 and 2017 are special to me personally, because they were on the team during my last year as the director of football communications. Two of my lasting memories involve Skalski and Turner. I vividly remember the Friday before a home game in 2016 when we learned that Skalski’s father had died suddenly. As a freshman, that had to be a very difficult time, but he showed maturity beyond his years.I also saw Dabo Swinney’s and Brent Venables’ role as “father figures” when it came to helping Skalski. The Friday schedule was delayed so they could spend time with Skalski and get someone to drive him home. I saw the true Clemson Family from the inside that day.I also remember an interview I set up for Turner in December 2016. He had not played in a game yet, but we all knew the story of his father, Kevin, an NFL player for eight years who had died the previous March 24 of ALS. Kevin was Swinney’s teammate at Alabama.Jack Ford, a longtime friend from “60 Minutes Sports,” was doing an in-depth story on his father and wanted to a do a long interview with Turner. It was a cold, dark evening, but we did the interview outside in the WestZone. Turner answered all the difficult questions. I could see that day that he would be an outstanding leader in the future. Many recruiting analysts said that Swinney gave him a scholarship because his father was an Alabama teammate. In 2018, Turner had a key interception against Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl. In 2019, he had a game-saving interception against Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. In 2020, he was an All-American.There are many leaders in this class, and it is the major reason this team has come back from a challenging start to a 7-3 record. The Tigers still have a chance to win the ACC title and to extend the program’s streak of double-digit-win seasons to 11.While today’s seniors date to 2016, for the sake of consistency, we will review some of the facts of this group from the last four years.• Has a 46-6 record, the second-most wins in the nation in the last four years, just one behind Alabama (47-4).• Has won three ACC titles and made three College Football Playoff appearances.• Won the 2018 national championship with a 44-16 win over top-ranked Alabama.• Has finished in the top four of the AP poll each of the last three years.• Has a perfect home record, leading to the program’s 33-game home winning streak entering today’s game, the longest active streak in the nation and the longest streak by a program since Boise State (2006-11) won 35 games in a row and Oklahoma (2005-11) won 39 games in a row.• Has recorded nine wins over top-25 teams, including four wins over top-four teams. Our appreciation for this group of seniors is considerable, as it has made a great contribution to the heritage of Tiger football.

Regan Upshaw – Unexpected Path

Note: The following appears in the Florida State football gameday program. Unexpected. Regan Upshaw’s journey at Clemson has been nothing short of that. From a talented rugby player who had never seen the field as a football player to now a sixth-year senior who serves as a leader for the defense, it is safe to say that Upshaw’s experience playing for the Tigers has been unique. His childhood sports were unlike what many of his teammates experienced. He was an avid rugby player and was skilled enough to where he could have eventually played professionally. Football was not in the list of sports he played, although the Upshaw family had a football background. Football was a well-known sport in his household, since Upshaw’s father, who goes by the same first name, was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the No. 12 overall pick in the 1996 NFL draft. However, that did not mean that Upshaw followed in his father’s footsteps. Despite the family history, Upshaw, along with his brothers, were not allowed to play football growing up. “My dad didn’t want to push me and my brothers into doing what he did, which is why we weren’t allowed to play football for a long time. But I respect him a lot now seeing that he didn’t want to put that pressure on us, and thankfully we never felt any pressure from him about football.” If Upshaw never played the sport before college, how did he end up playing for one of top teams in the country? Upshaw has his sister to thank. His visit to Clemson was not planned. The Upshaw family was traveling from their hometown of Bradenton, Fla. to Brevard, N.C. to take his sister to a summer camp. Since Brevard is only a 50-mile drive from Clemson, Upshaw’s father asked if he was interested in visiting the Clemson campus. The Upshaws immediately fell in love with Clemson, especially when Upshaw’s father stumbled upon one of the football camps Head Coach Dabo Swinney was running. “My dad was very impressed by the way Clemson did things and loved the culture here. As everyone in the country knows now, the culture here is special, and my dad saw that right away. “He has been in football for so long from playing professionally, and he could instantly see the love the coaching staff had and the intensity that the players played with, and he knows that is the right way to play football. My dad said that he had never seen football coached like that and was impressed to see that passion.” Upshaw had made his decision and knew this was where he wanted to be after visiting. His father was so impressed by the football program Clemson offered that he asked his son if he wanted to go to the camp the following summer. It was an immediate “yes” from the younger Upshaw. The following year, he participated in Swinney’s football camp, catching the eye of the Tiger mentor. After a talk with Swinney, Upshaw had earned a spot on the team, but due to his limited football experience, Upshaw’s only option was to join the program as a walk-on. Nevertheless, that did not stop him from joining the squad. Since that fateful decision, Upshaw has become known for being one of the hardest workers on the team, especially by his growth and work in the weight room. It is clear that Upshaw did not waste any opportunities when it came to becoming a better player. In last year’s game at Wake Forest, Upshaw had his first breakthrough performance, and he finally got to see his last five years at Clemson start to pay off. Playing mostly on special teams his previous seasons, Upshaw entered the game with only 12 tackles in 26 career games. But on that night, after totaling just 41 defensive snaps the previous season, the fifth-year senior was on the field for 36 snaps and recorded four tackles and a sack to help lead the Tigers to victory. “That game was a great opportunity, and it was my opportunity to display the things I had been practicing for a long time. Sometimes, it just takes for you to be given that opportunity, and playing in that game was no different from what I’ve already been doing for years...it was just all behind closed doors. So, I got the opportunity to perform in that game, and I did what I always do in practice...it’s that simple.” The Wake Forest game in 2020 was the turning point for #53, but he did not stop there, as he finished with 19 tackles, two sacks and a pass breakup in 166 snaps over 10 games. The defensive end was given more recognition as well, with the honor of being placed on scholarship and being recognized as an NSCA Strength & Conditioning All-American. The now sixth-year senior has come a long way and is a respected and experienced leader of the defense, but he never lets anything change his mindset and has always stayed the course. “I’ve continuously been the same guy, and I’ve always come with the same intensity since I got here six years ago. I always felt like I could be a leader. I never thought of myself as a walk-on and I never labeled myself. I know that it can be a harder journey coming in as a walk-on, but I try to have the attitude of when I step on the field, I’m the top dog.” When asked about his favorite memories at Clemson and what he will miss most about playing football, Upshaw was quick to talk about his teammates. “I have had the best teammates who have made this whole experience amazing. I will definitely miss the relationships here the most and being able to see my teammates every day.” Although playing for Clemson was unpredicted for Upshaw, nothing ever felt like a mistake or a surprise to him. It all felt like part of the journey.
