ACT for ALS Act endorsed by I AM ALS, ALS Association and Muscular Dystrophy Association
WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, U.S. Senators Chris Coons (D-Del.), co-chair of the Senate ALS Caucus, and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), along with U.S. Representatives Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) and Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) reintroduced the bipartisan, bicameral
Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS Act (ACT for ALS). This legislation would create the infrastructure necessary to fund early access to promising investigational therapies for patients suffering from fast-progressing rare neurodegenerative and terminal diseases, like ALS.
“Action to support patients with ALS and discover new therapies is incredibly urgent,”

The U.S. House will introduce a bill to prohibit keeping big cats as pets and help protect public safety! The Big Cat Public Safety Act was passed during the last Congress in December, but we must keep fighting for stronger federal laws!
The bill was reintroduced on January 11 by Representatives Mike Quigley (D-IL) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). The measure passed the House in December with a strong bipartisan majority.

Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) said in an emailed statement, “We’ve closely investigated Joe Exotic and other big cat exploiters and documented the flagrant abuse and serious public safety hazards that characterize their cynical and tawdry operations. Not only are paying customers in danger interacting with wild animals, they are contributing to a cruel and violent industry. When the cubs used for petting grow too large, they are caged, sold to the pet trade or killed. Congress must stop this insanity and pass the Big Cat Public Safety Act.”

Born Free USA Applauds Reintroduction of Bill to Limit Private Ownership of and Public Contact with Big Cats

Born Free USA applauds yesterday’s reintroduction of the Big Cat Public Safety Act (H.R. 263) in the U.S. House of Representatives. Reintroduced by Representatives Mike Quigley (D-IL) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), this bill would ban the private possession of big cat species, with exemptions for zoos, universities, and bona fide sanctuaries. The bill also bans direct public contact with big cats, removing a strong incentive to breed big cats unchecked for profit. In December 2020, this important legislation passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, but was not taken up by the Senate before the end of the 116th Congress. Born Free USA calls on the newly gaveled-in 117th Congress to quickly pass the reintroduced bill.

Global Leaders Must End Wildlife Trafficking, Unsustainable Trade
Washington, DC—Wildlife trafficking and the unsustainable wildlife and plant trade is a multibillion-dollar industry and a major threat to species in the United States and worldwide, according to a new report released today that highlights 10 species imperiled by this burgeoning trade.
Compiled by the Endangered Species Coalition with assistance from the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) and other animal welfare and conservation groups, the report, “Trafficked: 10 Species Threatened by the Wildlife Trade,” discusses how legal and illegal commerce involving wildlife and plants is driving significant declines in species’ populations, and, in some cases, poses a direct threat to human health.
