Salvation Army pushes to 'Rescue Christmas' early as millions reel in pandemic

Facing a possible drop of up to 50% in fundraising from its iconic Red Kettle Campaign and a 155% increase in demand for its social services, The Salvation Army is launching its annual holiday fundraising campaign early for the first time in 130 years as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

10,000 children benefit from generosity of Sheetz employees and customers

The Salvation Army and Sheetz have collaborated to do good by bringing holiday cheer to underprivileged children for several years. They announced the successful conclusion of their 2020 Sheetz For the Kidz™ holiday program, which was part of The Salvation Army’s ‘Rescue Christmas’ campaign. Thanks to Sheetz employees’ and customers’ generosity, nearly 10,000 children in need from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina were able to celebrate the holiday season with new toys, clothes and basic needs.
Prior to COVID-19, the Sheetz For the Kidz program worked with The Salvation Army to identify underprivileged children within Sheetz’s footprint and collect their holiday wish lists. Sheetz employees from each operating area would purchase items on the children’s wish lists, wrap them and host parties for all the participating children. Customer donations were collected in Sheetz stores, and local fundraisers were held to support the program.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Donations to The Birmingham Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign are different this year, much like everything else, due to the coronavirus.
The Salvation Army has used red kettles to fundraise at Christmastime for 130 years, and although this year looks a little different, the kettles still bring positive change to our community.
“Kettle season is The Salvation Army’s largest annual campaign. We rely heavily on the funds received during this season to fund our feeding and shelter programs,” stated Major Charles Powell, Area Commander, The Salvation Army of Greater Birmingham. “We are so appreciative and honored that our community has supported us during this difficult time. We have one week left in the Christmas season, so we would like to ask again for your help in making this season a big win for our neighbors in need by joining the #FightForGood.”

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Monday, members of the Salvation Army cut the ribbon at a warehouse where thousands of gifts were stored and ready to be hand-delivered to families for this Christmas.
"Operation: Rescue Christmas" was the theme this year for the organization's Christmas Depot, since the pandemic made it difficult for families in the region to purchase gifts for the holiday.
