Lilongwe First Grade Magistrate Robert Botha has ordered driver of a Tata lorry, Davie Chimalizeni, to pay a fine of K1.3 million for causing death by reckless driving. The accident occurred on December 5, 2020 while the lorry was heading to Mitundu with four passengers on Board. Lilongwe Police spokesperson, Joseph Kachikho, said the driver, upon arrival at Guzani Trading Centre, had a head on collision with another lorry after failing to negotiate a bend due to speeding. The Lilongwe First Grade Magistrate’s Court has convicted and eventually issued fines between K5, 000 and K10, 000 to 56 people for flouting Covid-19 rules. The convicts were arrested over the weekend at Mogassa, M1 Centre Point and Chigwiri as some were found operating bars beyond 8 o’clock in the evening while others were found drinking beer without wearing face masks.
