What has been deemed an 'honest mistake' has led to a Northland man receiving a $1600 fine for the removal of historic war artefacts from Ruapekapeka Pa.
Sadly, these offences are happening at important cultural heritage sites across New Zealand and are not always so innocent, the Department of Conservation (DoC) said.
Te Ruapekapeka Trust and DoC were alerted through comments on Facebook that the man was seen using a metal detector and removing artefacts at Ruapekapeka pa in late January.

New Zealand's government has proposed that all children learn the history of Maori people and British colonisation in a set course that teachers must follow, ending a system where schools choose how those subjects are taught.
Supporters of the change say the country's history as currently taught tends to gloss over atrocities against indigenous people during colonisation, while critics say the new curriculum would fail to present a balanced view of the past.
"Let us teach it, let us learn it and let us remember it. Let us share our history with every student in every school...," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said as she released a draft of the course, which she plans to introduce next year.

Te Ruapekapeka Trust are progressing ceremonial plans in remembrance of all those who were involved in the conflict at Te Ruapekapeka Pa, to be held tomorrow, Wednesday 3rd February.
The ceremonies will start with a flag raising ceremony on the pa starting at 6:00am, where hapū are invited to raise their kara (flags) aloft in unison to remember and respect those that fought and fell for their cause.
