After issuing the recall order on May 19 and asking banks to open special counters to collect the notes from the public from May 23, the central bank said the existing 2,000 denomination banknotes would continue to be legal tender.

The RBI, on May 19, announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes as part of the clean note policy.
RBI governor's in a statement stated that Rs 1.80 lakh cr of Rs 2000 notes, representing nearly half of the outstanding notes were returned.
Governor Das, who was addressing the media in a press conference after the Monetary Policy Committee announcements on Thursday, also said that the central bank is not considering withdrawing Rs 500 notes or re-introducing Rs 1,000 notes, and urged the public to not speculate over the same.
