OBSERVING THAT forging caste certificates to secure admission in medical courses deprived society from availing services of qualified practitioners at the expense of genuine students, a city sessions court on Tuesday rejected the anticipatory bail application of a 62-year old man. An FIR has been registered at Bhoiwada police station after a caste verification committee found certificates to be forged for admission to MBBS courses on seats meant for students belonging to Scheduled Tribes.

Maharashtra: Hospitality industry frowns on night curfew, says massive blow for sector
Members of hotel associations have said that they will urge the government to reconsider its decision as it will only add to the financial blow the industry has faced this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

To circumvent these restrictions, some five-star hotels have also planned ‘staycation’ events, including dinner and breakfast packages with limited guests. (Representational)
The state government’s announcement of a night curfew in Mumbai, from December 22 to January 5, has dampened the spirits of hotels and restaurants whose representatives have opined that the move is a massive body blow for the hospitality sector that was just beginning to regain its pace. The sector was hoping for improved business during the holiday season, when many outlets traditionally witness a substantial turnout of patrons.

Maharashtra: Study spanning 11 jails throws light on experiences of prisoners meeting families

“There are good practices in each of the prisons we visited, which can be emulated by others. For instance, feedback from prisoners and families on Gala Bhet in Maharashtra shows that it can be tried in other jails as well. Tamil Nadu facilitates visits by children during weekends so that they don’t have to miss school,” said Surekha Sale, who was part of the data collection team.
In Maharashtra, the study found that while there were good practices like money order facility and an intercom for prisoners to hear their family members more clearly, it lacked facilities like pre-booking mulaqats or counselling support for prisoners or special programmes for prisoners who do not have contact with their family and continued to have cancellation of visits as a means of punishment for prison conduct, a practice done away with by Puzhal jail.

New arrests due to increase in crimes and denial of bail citing the unlockdown are factors leading to congestion in jails, even as the danger of the pandemic still looms. (Representational)
Even as apprehensions of a second wave of Covid-19 remain, prisons in the state have become congested again with the current population nearing 31,000. While at one point during the lockdown, the inmate population had reduced to nearly 24,000 — a little over its official capacity of 23,217 — nearly half of the state’s prisons are overcrowded again, some housing inmates more than double their capacities.

THE BOMBAY High Court on Thursday ordered for “proper protection” to be given to witnesses in the case of a 32-year-old convict’s death at Nashik central jail in October. After the convict died by suicide leaving behind a note in his abdomen alleging that he was harassed by five prison officials, some of his co-inmates had also written to authorities about it.
