CARLSBAD (CNS) -- Carlsbad resident Kaillie Humphries Saturday became the first woman to win four bobsled world championships when she teamed with Lolo Jones to win the two-woman title at Altenberg, Germany.
Humphries, the sled's driver, and Jones, the push athlete, led the German duo of Kim Kalicki and Ann-Christin Strack by 0.34 seconds after Friday's two runs in the championships conducted by the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation.

The U.S. assured itself of the victory with the fastest time on the final run, 57.87 seconds. Its combined time for the four runs was three minutes, 48.26 seconds, 0.35 seconds ahead of the Germans.
"It's such a huge relief," the 35-year-old Humphries said. "This was a giant team effort. To be able to cross the finish line and see that number one and know everything worked according to plan is the biggest relief ever. There's a huge wave of happiness and elation that comes over you. It's super cool to share this with Lolo and with Team USA."
Humphries also won last year's world championship in the event, tying the retired German bobsledder Sandra Kiriasis with three world championships.

Kaillie Humphries got some help from a U.S. bobsled legend on her way to making history Saturday.
Humphries is the world women’s bobsled champion for a record fourth time, teaming with Lolo Jones to win the title on a snowy day in Altenberg, Germany. Humphries and Jones finished their four runs over two days in 3 minutes, 48.26 seconds.
And Humphries drove to the title in a sled equipped with runners that were owned by Steven Holcomb, the former world and Olympic champion who died nearly four years ago.

Humphries seeking record 4th women's bobsled world title

Kaillie Humphries didn’t need long to answer when asked who she considers to be among the best drivers in bobsled history. The names aren’t exactly surprising: Andre Lange and Francesco Friedrich of Germany, Pierre Lueders of Canada, Steven Holcomb of the U.S.
She didn’t put herself on that list.
A win this weekend might leave Humphries no choice but to consider herself part of that elite club. Humphries is the defending women’s world bobsled champion and will team up with Lolo Jones this weekend at Altenberg, Germany, in a bid to win her fourth title — something no female pilot has ever done.

Sunday, 17 January 2021
Germany's Francesco Friedrich continued to make history on the final day of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup after his team broke the four-man bobsleigh track record in St Moritz in Switzerland.
Friedrich yesterday set a new record for World Cup wins after victory in the two-man event and after winning today, now has 48 wins to his name.
He surpassed the previous record holder, the retired women's driver Sandra Kiriasis, also of Germany.
His new track record was set in the second run, with the new best being a time of 1min 04.75sec.
Friedrich and his team of Martin Grothkopp, Alexander Schüller and Thorsten Margis, held off a strong Austrian side piloted by Benjamin Maier, to win another gold medal.

Friedrich becomes outright record winner of IBSF World Cup in St Moritz

Saturday, 16 January 2021
Francesco Friedrich became the outright record-holder for bobsleigh World Cup wins as the German pilot celebrated victory in the two-man event in St Moritz.
Friedrich last week tied the record of 46, which was achieved by retired women's driver Sandra Kiriasis of Germany.
The Olympic and world champion secured the outright record today, triumphing with brakeman Alexander Schueller.
The duo achieved the fastest time on both runs on the Swiss track, clocking 1min 6.27sec in the first and 1:05.65 in the second.
A combined time of 2:11.92 was enough to give Friedrich a ninth two-man success of the World Cup season.
