'We Are Families That Are Hurting': Vigils Honor Victims Of Thursday's Mass Shooting

Community members and elected officials came together Saturday to offer prayers and call for an end to violence during vigils honoring the victims of Indianapolis’ latest mass shooting.
About 200 people attended a candlelight vigil at Krannert Park on Indianapolis’ westside Saturday evening. Eight candles were lit to represent each person killed late Thursday night when a former employee arrived at a FedEx facility and opened fire with two assault rifles.
Ryenne Beaty is a childhood friend of 19-year-old Samaria Blackwell, who was among those who died. She said she did not believe the news at first.

Indianapolis is still reeling from the shock of a mass shooting at a FedEx facility that left eight people dead and several others wounded.
But for DeAndra Dycus, Pamela Wooden, Brenda Hutson and other members of Purpose 4 My Pain, the turmoil is more personal. They’ve all lost children to gun violence. It’s a club whose membership they wouldn’t wish on anyone, so when they heard the news that eight more families were now experiencing the same pain, Dycus said they knew they needed to act.
“I wanted to show solidarity in our community, because we’re tired,” Dycus said. “Enough is enough. And I wanted families who have been impacted by gun violence to know their community is here to support them.”

INDIANAPOLIS - Residents held vigils here Saturday in memory of eight people gunned down late Thursday at a FedEx plant, as authorities continued to investigate why the 19-year-old gunman targeted his former workplace.

Mourners held a vigil for the eight FedEx workers slain Thursday — allegedly by a former co-worker — as Indianapolis reels from the nation’s latest mass shooting.
About 50 people mourners attended the vigil at Olivet Missionary Baptist Church, according to The Indianapolis Star.
Savana DeLao and Michelle Parks would have been working at the facility Thursday night under normal circumstances, but DeLao left work early, and Parks didn’t work her usual shift, claiming something "didn’t feel right," according to the report.
"I was laughing, like ‘you guys have a good day. I’ll see you next week,'" DeLao reportedly said to her colleagues, as she punched out several hours before the massacre.
