J'khand at bottom of SDG hunger index | Ranchi News

Ranchi: Jharkhand is among the three worst-performing states along with Bihar and Assam in this year’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) index released by Niti Aayog on Thursday. In terms of hunger reduction, the state fared at the bottom of all 28 states.
While the state government is yet to issue any formal reaction to the report, the ruling Congress party has rejected the ratings.
State finance minister Rameshwar Oraon, who also holds the food and civil supplies portfolio, could not be reached for comments, spokesperson of his party, Alok Dubey said, “We are yet to go through the details, but going by the preliminary report, we do not agree to the findings. As far as the hunger situation is concerned, the state government is at the forefront since the outbreak of the pandemic to help the people like running community kitchens and distributing advance ration among others. All ruling parties of our alliance government also run separate welfare camps to ensure that no one goes hungry.”

′Progress made′ on Target 11 global biodiversity goals | News | DW

'Progress made' on Target 11 global biodiversity goals
An update on targets set for establishing conservation zones to protect biodiversity has hailed the "progress" made in the past decade, albeit warning of much work ahead.
The report highlighted oceanic regions, particularly international waters, as lagging behind on establishing protected nature areas
Ahead of the UN's next Biodiversity Conference in China in October, conservationists reported "major progress" — although incomplete — in rescuing the world's shrinking biodiversity over the past decade by establishing conservation areas on land and at sea.
Land targets exceeded, oceanic ones missed but soon to be met
That Target 11 urged the world to "protect and integrate" at least 17% of its terrestrial and inland waters and 10% of its coastal and marine areas through effective governance and safeguarding ecological systems.

Judging a business - The Hindu BusinessLine

Judging a business
Giving back to society as vital as profit-making
In recent years, measuring the societal impact of business has become an increasingly important metric in judging the “worth” of businesses. Globally, in C-suites, boardrooms as well as within the investing community the contribution that businesses collectively and individually make to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is seen as on a par with profitability, capital growth and dividends.
As such, pressure has been growing on companies to be seen to be giving back to society in a meaningful and measurable way. And this makes sense. Direct involvement from business shares the burden with government efforts. Direct involvement instils a sense of responsibility and well-being amongst employees. Consumers are increasingly conscious of the products they buy, and brands are increasingly working to align themselves with these views.

Not all UN Sustainable Development Goals are good for the environment, reveals study

Not all UN Sustainable Development Goals are good for the environment, reveals study
A study reviewed existing academic papers on the UN’s global goals and found that 63 of the 169 targets may impact forests either adversely or positively.
The UN’s key areas for global development – known as the SDGs – range from tackling poverty, hunger and sanitation to promoting clean energy, economic growth and reducing inequality.
Progress towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals targets, relating to energy and infrastructure, has the potential to be the most damaging to the world’s forest ecosystems, even though there are a greater number of goals that will be beneficial to forests, according to new research.

There are 17 goals under the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UNESCAP), targeted to be achieved by 2030.
National governments can use the tool to produce snapshots of progress towards the ambitions of the 2030 Agenda, it said.
The Asia-Pacific region is lagging behind in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set for 2030, and at the current rate the region may achieve less than 10 per cent of the targets, a UN report said on Tuesday. As many as 829 million workers employed in the informal sector were impacted in April 2020 due to the pandemic-induced lockdown, the report noted.

Safeguarding Malaysia's rich rainforests

Malaysia’s forests are a key environmental asset, contributing to climatic stability and sustaining an astonishing spectrum of wildlife and plant species.
Malaysia’s rainforests are among the most diverse on the planet. A key environmental asset, forests contribute to climate stability, protect water and soil resources, as well as sustain a diverse ecosystem of flora and fauna.
To ensure the perpetual sustainability of our forests, Malaysia made the pledge at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit to maintain at least 50% of its total land area under forest cover.
Today, almost three decades later, we have not reneged on that pledge as currently, 55.3% of the country’s total land area of 18.27 million hectares is covered with forests. Out of this total forested area, 10.92 million hectares are Permanent Reserve Forests, and 3.31 million hectares are totally protected areas. This represents the nation’s will and commitment to conserve and sustainably manage our forest, its flora and fauna.

Over one-sixth of total food produced globally ends up in waste bins | India News

Image use for representative purpose
NEW DELHI: An estimated 931 million tonnes of food, or 17% of total food available to consumers in 2019 globally, went into the waste bins of households, retailers, restaurants and other food services, said the Food Waste Index Report 2021, released by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on Thursday.
The weight of the global food waste roughly equals India’s total production of foodgrain, oilseeds, sugarcane and horticultural produce, put together, in 2019-20.
The report shows that most of this waste globally comes from households followed by food services and retail outlets.
Times View
Many people die of hunger every year across the globe and yet 931 million tonnes of food was wasted the world over in 2019. In India too, where millions survive at subsistence level, tonnes of food is wasted. Experts must suggest ways to get out of this grim paradox or at least minimise it. We also need awareness campaigns on the subject, both by the government and by civil society groups.
