Will Northern try to buy off drivers to undermine guards' victory?

The breakthrough in the anti-DOO dispute is a cause for celebration, but some caution must also be exercised. No formal settlement has yet been reached, and the "other stakeholders" referred to in Acas chair Brendan Barber's letter to RMT General Secretary Mick Cash must be drivers' union Aslef. Aslef has past form selling out RMT members as well as its own members in the big DOO dispute with GTR Southern in 2016/17. In addition, Aslef reps on the Northern Company Council has been acting to aid the company in pushing forward its DOO agenda.

RMT demonstration against all rail funding cuts
BLAME for the the crash at Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire on Wednesday 12 August 2020, in which three people were killed, has been laid firmly at the door of Network Rail for failing to maintain the area around the track.
Train drivers union ASLEF welcomed an interim report by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch into the Stonehaven crash, which claimed the lives of driver Brett McCullough, 45, conductor Donald Dinnie, 58, and passenger Christopher Stuchbury, 62 – and in which six other people were injured.
The RAIB exonerated the driver of the train and found that the accident, which cast a long shadow across Britain’s railway industry, was caused by ‘debris washed onto the track near Carmont, Aberdeenshire, following heavy rainfall.

The Weekly Round-Up of Those Stories You Probably Missed
Some Small, but Perfectly Formed, Logistics Items
WORLDWIDE – Following our recent story regarding the continued presence of asbestos in merchant vessels, we were contacted by Mesothelioma.com, a body dedicated to providing the latest medical information on the horrible disease and educating on the dangers of asbestos exposure, plus helping those who are affected and advising on legal matters.
The organisation has published an article on the dangers to shipyard workers with estimates putting the number of staff affected globally to be at least two and a half million. This means the work historically has been amongst the most hazardous in terms of exposure to asbestos, and it would seem, despite the regulations now in force, that an unacceptable level of risk still persists.
