WASHINGTON - U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a summit next month in Geneva, the first face-to-face meeting of the two leaders at a time when the two countries are at odds on several contentious issues.
The White House confirmed details of the June 16 meeting with Putin on Tuesday, saying Biden would add the meeting to his first international trip as president when he visits Britain for a meeting with the Group of Seven leaders and Brussels for a NATO summit.

For opponents of President Vladimir Putin in Russia, it seems as if there's no place that's safe these days — including in their own homes.
"It was like 'bang, bang, bang' for half an hour," said Nikita Golovizin, an activist from the city of Voronezh about five hundred kilometres south of the capital Moscow, as he described how security agents parked themselves outside his apartment for several hours on one recent evening.

Kremlin critic Navalny looks thin and drained after hunger strike

Jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny (pictured)
, looking gaunt and drained after a hunger strike, denounced Russia's justice system on Thursday (29 April) as his team said he faced new criminal charges and that it was disbanding a network of regional campaign offices, write Polina Nikolskaya and Anton Zverev.
In his first appearance since declaring an end to the three-week hunger strike last week, Navalny, his head shaven, remained defiant, though a blurry video link from jail during a legal hearing in a separate case showed he had lost weight.
Rejecting accusations in the separate case of defaming a World War Two veteran, Navalny said: "I demand that people who signed signatures (against him), (and) the prosecutors be brought to criminal justice."

Alexey Navalny appears on screen via videolink in a Moscow courtroom on Thursday.
A judge in Moscow upheld a defamation conviction Thursday against jailed Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny, who joined a court hearing via videolink, in his first public appearance since he went on hunger strike.
The visibly gaunt Navalny used the platform to launch a broadside against President Vladimir Putin and his government, likening him to the foolish "naked king" from "The Emperor's New Clothes" children's tale and calling the judge and prosecutors "traitors."

Navalny in a court appearance on Thursday ripped Putin as a "naked king" clinging to power.
"Your naked king wants to rule until the end. He doesn't care about the country," Navalny said.
The imprisoned Russian opposition leader's defiant comments came after a weeks-long hunger strike.
Alexei Navalny on Thursday decried Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "naked king" clinging to power, during what marked the Kremlin critic's first public appearance since he went on a hunger strike in prison.
