On the second day of April, the skies were clear and the view from atop Mount Umunhum in the South Bay spread across a sea of green shrubs and trees carpeting the Santa Cruz Mountains.
It was a beautiful sight, but a team of researchers from San Jose State University's Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center — the only wildfire research center in California — noticed something wasn't quite right.

In a modern reimagining of Ed Spielman’s hit series that starred David Carradine, “Kung Fu” is returning to network television with two unprecedented changes: The lead is a Chinese American woman and the cast is predominantly Asian American, a rarity in the landscape of network television dramas.
The gender-flipped reboot chronicles the journey of Nicky Shen (Olivia Liang), a young woman who, after going through a quarter-life crisis, decides to drop out of university and take a life-altering journey to a remote Chinese monastery. When Nicky returns to San Francisco three years later, she discovers that her hometown has been overrun with crime and corruption and that the local Chinatown, where her parents Jin (Tzi Ma) and Mei-Li (Kheng Hua Tan) own a family restaurant, has been at the mercy of a powerful triad. She’s forced to use her martial arts skills to protect her community, while searching for the assassin who killed her Shaolin mentor.

California is expanding vaccine eligibility to all residents 16 and over beginning April 15, and hundreds of thousands of people will be scrambling to find appointments.
You may have heard finding an appointment can be tricky. While health care providers, pharmacies and counties are continually opening appointments daily, they go fast.
To help you book an appointment if you're newly eligible, we asked readers to share their experiences with securing slots to provide tips for others navigating a system that is confusing and overwhelming.

LATEST April 6, 10:15 a.m. The alleged attacker in an incident of anti-Asian racism that reportedly took place at a North Beach sports bar has been identified by the victim's mother as retired pro boxer Pat Lawlor.
Gino and Carlo owner Frank Rossi told SFGATE on Monday that Lawlor was a regular at the bar, but was otherwise unaffiliated with it. A man wielding a machete broke up the robbery of his elderly Asian parents in Oakland on Monday afternoon.
Video of the incident was first tweeted by KGO's Dion Lim. One clip shows four individuals surrounding the couple on their front porch, riffling through their pockets, until the couple's adult son runs out of the house with a machete. In a second clip, the suspects can be seen jumping into their getaway vehicle and driving away. Lim said running the license plate resulted in no hits which may indicate the plate is fake.

“Police attempting to capture large toad” isn’t a typical message you see pop up on your phone as a safety alert. But for San Francisco residents who have the Citizen app, many got exactly that as an alert on Tuesday afternoon.
