Nathi Mthethwa's department silent as desperate artis...

In a desperate attempt for answers from the National Arts Council, about 20 artists began a sit-in on Wednesday, 3 March at the National Arts Council offices in Newtown, Johannesburg, demanding answers about the R300-million Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme.

Two days earlier, on Monday, 1 March, opera star Sibongile Mngoma was among those who had sought answers from the NAC. Mngoma said she was dissatisfied with the answers given. She returned on Wednesday, with actor Thami Mbongo and others.  They then decided to embark on a sit-in.

Artists say the Covid-19 pandemic has devastated their industry, leaving them in dire straits, and this has been compounded by a lack of fundings from the National Arts Council (NAC).
Artist Shaeleen Tobin says the majority of those who applied have not been able to access the  R300 million-plus in support that was want to keep them performing.
"People have signed contracts, now the NAC is trying to renege on those contracts," she says.
"Of the people that have been paid...a grand total of no more than R30 million has been paid out," says Tobin.
