A viable quantum internet—a network in which information stored in qubits is shared over long distances through entanglement—would transform the fields of data storage, precision sensing and computing, ushering in a new era of communication.
This month, scientists at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory—a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory affiliated with the University of Chicago—along with partners at five institutions took a significant step in the direction of realizing a quantum internet.

One of the researchers involved in the study said that the results they've achieved will be further improved with "system upgrades" they now expect to complete in 2021.
A joint team of researchers from Fermilab, AT&T, Caltech, Harvard University, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and University of Calgary has for the first time managed to attain a sustained teleportation of qubits of photons over a distance of 44 km of fibre, with SciTechDaily describing this achievement as a "significant step in the direction of realising a quantum internet."

Sustained, Long-Distance Quantum Teleportation Achieved


In a major breakthrough, a joint team of researchers from Caltech, the Department of Energy’s Fermilab, AT&T, Harvard University, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, and the University of Calgary announced that they managed to teleport qubits of photons across approximately
27 miles (43.4523 kilometers) of fiber-optic cable, per
Fermilab.
Similar projects had been done in the past; however, this one distinguishes itself from the others due to it being the first to beam quantum information across such a great distance. 
The experiment, done by using "off-the-shelf" equipment that is compatible with both existing telecommunications infrastructure and emerging quantum technologies, might "provide a realistic foundation for a high-fidelity quantum internet with practical devices," the researchers told

This month, scientists at Fermilab, a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory, and their partners took a significant step in the direction of realizing a quantum internet.
In a paper published in PRX Quantum, the team presents for the first time a demonstration of a sustained, long-distance (44 kilometers of fiber) teleportation of qubits of photons (quanta of light) with fidelity greater than 90%. The qubits were teleported over a fiber-optic network using state-of-the-art single-photon detectors and off-the-shelf equipment.
