Review: The Girl On The Train: Derailed drama - INDIA New England News

Don’t sit on the edge of your seat as you watch this, you might just fall off dozing.
They needn’t worry about comparisons, there’s scope for none. Ribhu Dasgupta’s Bollywoodised rehash (oops, adaptation) of Paula Hawkins’ bestseller of the same name is too lazy to recreate the slow-burn shock value of the novel and banks on a tangle of too many inconsequential twists.
Hawkins’ written work, an intensely psychological piece, was always a challenge to recreate on screen. A lot of the ‘action’ in the book is actually internalised and it unfolds as thought process of the protagonist. You realised this aspect even while watching the Hollywood adaptation of 2016, starring Emily Blunt. However, Blunt did a great job conveying pain through silences, bringing alive emptiness in her gaze.

STORY: Once feisty lawyer Mira Kapoor (Parineeti Chopra) is spiralling under the trauma of losing her child, a husband she had loved and a career that was blossoming… one high-risk case at a time. Well, it doesn’t help either that an unfortunate car accident leaves her with a rare form of amnesia and she eventually turns into a massive alcoholic. But, hope (read obsession) crawls back into her life in the form of a woman. While frequenting the Redbridge-to-Greenwich train route every day, Mira admires the beautiful home and life of who later comes to be known as Nusrat John (Aditi Rao Hydari). However, that solace is short-lived. Nusrat is found dead in a forest and Mira’s digital footprint places her at the crime scene.

Mira Kapoor (Parineeti Chopra) finds herself in a tight spot when Inspector Kaur (Kirti Kulhari), a cop who is investigating murder case of a young woman, shoots a bunch of questions at her. The needle of suspicion points at our protagonist, who somehow manages to handle the situation. As a parting shot, Kaur gives her a piece of advice, "Do yourself a favour. Remember? Try to recall."
As Parineeti Chopra's character sets out to find the missing pieces of her life, you find yourself repeating Kaur's words everytime the film loses its track.

The Girl On The Train, a Netflix presentation, runs out of steam pretty quickly and degenerates into a bumpy ride. The film, written and directed by Ribhu Dasgupta, deviates sharply, and frequently, from the source material - British author Paula Hawkins' bestseller of the same title that yielded an Emily Blunt-fronted Hollywood movie in 2016 - and loses its way in a maze of cliches.
