were. >> lawrence: let's talk about that, general, in 2016, there was a lot of information about these s-300 air defense systems that they bought iran bought from russia i'm curious there is reports coming out of israel talking about they are not as strong as they thought it may have been, the iranians thought that they were strong. what do you know about this defense system and has technology superseded that defense system? >> yeah. lawrence. if there is two exontsd to any air defense system. win is radar and the kinetic capability. the missile that will shoot at the incoming jet. and what i think iran learned is that the s-300 radar cannot pick up the stealth fighter f-35. and so, i think that's the first part. and the missile system and the radar combined have about 120-kilometer or 57, 80-mile detection and shootdown range.

that's standard russia misinformation strategy. what actually happened here, the u.s. military has enormous sources to determine this from its surveillance satellites and other capabilities to look for, they're almost certain to be doing this now. the flash of a missile. the flash of an explosion in the air that would determine whether this was an explosion that originated from inside the plane or that there was a missiled launch prior to this plane coming down, and where a missile launched from. from the air or somewhere else. i was at d.i.a., defense intelligence agency, in the same room where they did the same thing. following the russian shootdown of mh-17. they looked at the data and determined it was a russian missile fired from russian-controlled territory. they are almost certainly in a similar room looking at similar data which would give an indication. was it an explosion from inside the plane? was there an explosion or a flash from a missile launch

top diplomat appearing on sunday's talk shows, he's using words that become more stern, more strong, more pointed and first of all, he's accusing the u.s. of trying to create nato-style alliance in asia going on to warn that if things persist that there could be a yaen-like crisis again under this backdrop of asia. the quote you pointed out it's worth repeating because it's so focused and targeted to the u.s., if the u.s. doesn't hit the brakes but continues to speed down the wrong path, no amount of guardrails can prevent derailing and there surely will be conflict and confrontation. these are really strong words. interesting to note today, poppy, he made reference once again to the u.s. shootdown of that suspected spy balloon again, suggesting it was an overreaction.

way that the trump administration has. they still have hoped that dialogue can be resumed after this recent incident of the shootdown of the surveillance balloon, they try to keep it from escalating into too large an issue that would prevent them from having dialogue down the road, even as secretary of state blinken did cancel his original trip to beijing at the time. so they're trying to manage it in a somewhat less bombastic way, i suppose, you could say, than the trump administration but kept the tariffs on that trump put on and basically share the view that china is in fact a singular threat on the international stage right now. >> peter baker, tom winter, garrett haake, thank you all very much. with us to continue our conversation is illinois congressman raja krishnamoorthi, ranking member of the house select committee on strategic competition between the u.s. and the chinese communist party. always a pleasure to see you. i thank you for your time. what are your biggest takeaways from last night's hearing? >> a couple of things.
