Shopee’s unexpected announcement that it would leave India after just five months in the market comes after its sister company Garena saw its mobile game Free Fire banned in the country over ties to China.
The retrenchment comes weeks after Shopee announced it was pulling out of France and after India banned Sea's popular gaming app "Free Fire".
On Monday, Shopee, which had announced its India entry last year, told its employees in a townhall meeting that the company will cease its India operations.
The development comes after a month of government banning 54 Chinese apps including Garena Free Fire of the Singapore-registered Sea Group.
