When it came to staging her Fall/Winter 2021 show, Alberta Ferretti wasn't about to play around. This season, the designer that usually shies away from all things unnecessarily flashy and flamboyant was clearly feeling the same nostalgia for the bygone times that many of us are feeling at the moment: that bittersweet wistfulness and hope that we all resume business as usual as soon as circumstances allow.

Dreams and aspirations abound.
There is no denying it: throughout the global pandemic that had the entire world under siege since the beginning of last year, many designers and fashion houses decided to pare things way back and shift their focus towards functionality rather than looks.
Sandy Liang, however, is not on the list of those designers.
“That’s the fundamental thing they teach you in design school: you have to be aspirational, you have to design for your dream woman. And I always kind of scoffed at that,” Liang explains. “I think that was the right thing to do when I was younger, but now it’s really important to be optimistic and to design things that don’t make sense for right now.”

Finding comfort in timeless pieces and moments from his past.
Finding comfort in timeless pieces and moments from his past.
January 19, 2021
For
Rhude's founder Rhuigi Villaseñor, the Fall/Winter 2021 fashion season was all about finding comfort in moments from his past.
The result? A reminiscent collection full of timeless pieces that merges the past with the present; the classic with the luxury; fond memories with a vision for the future.
Traveling back in time to relive his past experiences and seeking inspiration from classic cars and style choices from his collegiate years, Villaseñor brought in bits in pieces of his 90s youth that can be seen throughout the collection in a variety of ways. Expressing his admiration for classic and luxury cars through deconstructed automotive interiors and referencing the days spend roaming around school hallways through the use of denim, the designer evokes the endurance of these looks, once again proving to himself, everyone and everything around him that we are capable of persevering all challenges that have come across our paths.

Striking a balance between sophisticated elegance and domestic comfort.
Striking a balance between sophisticated elegance and domestic comfort.
January 19, 2021
Drawing inspiration from the designer’s personal experience of being at home during the global pandemic,
Brett Johnson's new Fall/Winter 2021 range is all about conveying this desire to create a balance between refined, sophisticated elegance and a more casual, relaxed domestic comfort.
For Brett, working from home and having to re-adjust everyday habits slowly morphed into a quest for understated, effortless luxury that stemmed from muted, comforting colors: timeless blue navy, off-white, black, grey to earth tones enhanced by pops of emerald. The materials imbue each garment with a deep sense of emotional warmth and tactile connection — as if to contrast any feeling of isolation and detachment of the past months. Materials like 12.5-micron cashmere, cashmere suede, grained calfskin, water repellent silk, sea island cotton, cotton and cashmere jersey, silk and cotton pique jerseys-- all play a big part in this comfy, WFH-friendly range.

A-COLD-WALL* Fall/ Winter 2021: 'Untitled'

In the past, Samuel Ross has always delved into quite deep, stimulating topics: the relationship between modernism, traditionalism and utilitarianism when they all come together in his AW19 range; the concept of “a professional man moving into a working environment”; an examination of the changes that took place in our world in the near (and distant) past. This year, the London-based designer brings forth his new menswear range in a film dubbed
'Untitled' — an energetic entwining of two disparate mood, moving between calm and burning intensity.
Words like 'portal', 'structure', 'saturate', 'mediate' and 'open' are enunciated tersely to sinister, futuristic beats; the set/runway itself has a dystopian, 1984-esque feel to it. Security cameras and voyeuristic spotlights are zooming in and focusing on the film's subjects in a room that is filled with what can be described as not much — a triangular structure, some foliage and rocks, shaping out the naturally-formed runway. Here, Ross takes the typical tropes of workwear and tech gear and re-interprets them through technical zip-up jackets, gilets, and trouser options, all combined with an elevated and interpretative take on formal wear. Notable mentions from the range include a pleated pajama look that transcends loungewear, a deconstructed and free-flowing brown suit, a range of graphic and geometrically-informed sweaters and a strong range of coats in bold colors (think purple double-breasted number worn by one of the models during the first half of this digital runway show.)
