utility company's inactions caused loss of life, severe inj injuries, complete destruction of homes and businesses, and damage to many of hawaii's historical and cultural sites. are they making a strong case? >> absolutely. these are lessons that any utility company who has been paying attention for the last decade would have foreseen as both what i call predictable and preventable. as far back as 2007 we learned the lessons in san diego of what happens when you don't take preventive measures like having a power safety shutoff system with a warning system of residents, at least days if not at least 72 hours in advance so they can, a, plan for evacuations, b, plan to have their power shut off and prevent the loss and destruction of lives. it happened again in california in 2015, again in 2017 and al

hawaii electric company, accusing them of starting those deadly wildfires. the company already faces numerous negligence lawsuits, but this is the first to say that their utility wires caused that blaze. nbc's steve patterson is on the ground there. what more can you tell us? >> just that, chris, that their utility caused that fire, that it was the significant wind event and messages that were ignored about the possibility of maybe deenergizing those lines that came down in the wind, in dry brush, all of this was stated by the national weather service. it was really bad weather for fire, and caused those fires. not only that, but there was deepening allegations of negligence going back years that the it should have been hardened and stabilized, some of the routine maintenance issues were ignored. there was no automatic shutoff, that a lot of utilities carry in case of a wind event.

hours before the flames decimated la high know saying that heco still, quote, kept their powerline energized. they do not have a formal shutoff program. and about a week after the wildfire, its president said this. >> it's worth noting that even in places where this has been used, it is controversial, and it's not universally accepted. it's seen -- it can be seen as creating a hardship for those customers that have medical needs, that are high risk. >> joining me now is john fiske. he is the attorney representing maui county in its lawsuit. john, thank you so much for being with us. i want to explain a little bit what the post is reporting here because it's so critical to our discussion that we're going to have here today. this is reporting that is based on court documents and records. and it says that heco removed downed power lines, may have

electric, as residents are trying to pin down exactly what sparked those catastrophic wildfires. joining me now is disaster and extreme weather reporter for "the washington post." she was recently on the ground reporting in hawaii. briana, thanks for being here. i found your reporting to be so illuminating in terms of what's going on here. this video which is riveting and very disconcerting. can you tell me a bit more the expectation is these wildfires were caused by these power lines? is that sort of the working thesis at this point? >> yeah, that can be apparent pretty early on. residents say power lines have caused quite a few fires on the island over the years, and they don't deploy a public safety power shutoff program, and there were all these reports from videos and residents themselves of power lines swinging, sparking in the wind. so that's -- it's definitely the

that there was mismanagement going back years, that there was supposed to be stabilization projects for the grid, hardening the grid where you have high wind events like this one, and there was supposed to be more programs like an automatic shutoff in the case that there was a wind event when you have dry brush, that there would be something that just automatically takes care of the fact that it could spark something to cause a massive fire in this case. of course, you know, we've been discussing that there are complications to that. many officials have said that the power is necessary for the operation of things like medical devices within lahaina. it's part of the discussion that's being had but certainly very important to this whole thing. >> we do know there had been at least a high wind warning, so there was -- there was that forecasted in terms of the potential fire danger at the very least. steve patterson, thank you very much for your reporting, and people from all across the country are trying to go to

in the country for another economic win? and now, secretary of state antony blinken to go to iran, and first to visit since 2017, and china is lowering the expectation, and what is the occasion for a trip as monumental as this? >> i have to say on the united states part of this, the briefings, the u.s. has also tried to lower the expectations. the most important thing that blinken could get out of this trip is to turn back on the military communication, and the essential hot line between the u.s. and the shutoff when then house speaker nancy pelosi went to taiwan. in recent weeks, we have had an increasing level of tensions between the u.s. and china and a

position, a white man's position. to a lesser extent the same thing was true of middle linebacker. in old school defenses the middle linebacker was the guy who called out defensive signals, and that was shutoff for black players for a very long time. but the barrier for black quarterbacks has come down. doug williams won a super bowl for washington in the 1980s, and it was a cause for celebration. it was very, very significant. there had been many black quarterbacks in the super bowl. mcnab for philadelphia, steve mcnar for tennessee played in the super bowl, cam newton for carolina played in the super bowl. colin kaepernick played in the super bowl for san francisco in the game i just mentioned. they didn't win it, but doug williams did win it. russell wilson did win it for seattle. patrick mahomes is trying to win it for the second second time for kansas city. while this is noteworthy, it's no longer that noteworthy. there's a dozen or more black quarterbacks in the nfl now
