HUSAVIK, Iceland - This is a little folk tale with otherworldly elements, like elves. And gleaming golden statuettes.
It is also about some nice things that happened to a tiny town in Iceland, which improbably found itself the setting for a major Hollywood film - and now the namesake for an Academy Award nomination for best original song.
The 2020 Netflix comedy "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga" isn't high art, for sure. A review of the reviews by critics on the website Rotten Tomatoes gave it 63 percent fresh rating. Robbie Collin in the Telegraph newspaper pronounced it, "Not a film so much as two hours of lump-free, vaguely film-like audiovisual paste." It's not "Nomadland."

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams,
has been nominated for exactly one Academy Award and nobody is more excited than the residents of a sleepy little town in Iceland.
The real-life Icelandic fishing town of Húsavík (pop. 2,300), where the film is set, has launched a clever grassroots YouTube campaign for the power ballad “Húsavík (My Hometown),” which is up for “Best Original Song.”
Having adopted the song as a local anthem, the town has created a series of videos that are charmingly silly and self-deprecating, just like the film. Húsavík’s fictional mayor, Óskar Óskarsson (played by actor Sigurdur Illugason) shows folks around town and expresses his hope that the song will win on Oscar night.

The tiny Icelandic town of Husavik, which was propelled to global fame by a hit Netflix musical comedy, “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga" has rolled out a red carpet on its main street in anticipation of even greater glory on Oscars night.
The song "Husavik - My Home Town", a ballad from the movie sung by Swedish pop singer Molly Sanden, has been nominated for an Academy Award for best original song, according to AFP.
In the quiet little harbour town near the Arctic Circle, the 2,300 residents are in a tizzy ahead of Sunday's Oscars festivities, which will feature a performance of the tune by Sanden recorded in the village itself.
