After a near washout of 2020 due to a stringent lockdown, Tamil cinema came back with the bang with the release of Vijay’s
Master for Pongal in January 2021. The movie saw the biggest theatrical release post-lockdown, opening in around 900 screens in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu. According to trade estimates,
Master grossed over ₹200 crore at the box office and pulled a decent number of audience back to theatres offering a ray of hope to film exhibitors across the country.

The rural entertainer that released on January 14, 2021, on the occasion of Pongal, opened to an average response at the theatres. Aravinth Srinivas, a doctor from Puducherry, wrote an open letter to actors Vijay and Silambarasan and the government of Tamil Nadu after the state allowed 100 per cent theatre occupancy. Read it below:
Doctor Aravinth Srinivas wrote an open letter to actors Vijay and Silambarasan and Tamil Nadu government. 
The Tamil Nadu government is receiving criticism for allowing 100 per cent occupancy in theatres. A doctor from the state has written an open letter to actors Vijay and Silambarasan and the government of the state.
Aravinth Srinivas, a junior doctor at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry, in the letter said that he and other frontline workers including police officials and sanitary workers are tired.
