May 5, 2021
Even as India fights a deadly Covid-19 crisis, a real estate project in the capital city has been the center of many discussions for several weeks now.
The Central Vista project, an estimated Rs20,000 crore ($2.8 billion) development of a new power corridor in New Delhi, is being widely debated and criticised as work at the site continues at full speed even after the capital city saw a sharp spike in Covid-19 cases and deaths.
Many believe that the project reflects the Narendra Modi government’s misplaced priorities.
What is the Central Vista project?
One of the most ambitious projects of the Modi government, the Central Vista will include a new parliament house to replace the current one that was constructed 93-year-old ago, new residences for the prime minister and the vice-president, and offices for several central government departments. These new buildings are being constructed along the Rashtrapati Bhavan-India Gate stretch in central Delhi.

Fake News and Communal Incitement Add Fuel to Post-Poll Fire in West Bengal
While all the opposition parties claim that their cadres have been attacked by TMC workers, the BJP has unleashed a social media storm of misleading posts, unverifiable pictures and inflammatory rumours.
Politics9 hours ago
In the past 48 hours, social media platforms have been packed with pictures and videos of the post-poll violence in West Bengal. More than 14 people have reportedly been killed and all the political parties in the state including the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have claimed that their cadres have been attacked.
Although the Left and Congress party members have also alleged retributive violence against their cadres by workers of the victorious TMC, the BJP is desperately trying to communalise this political violence by blaming it on Muslims and ‘infiltrators’. Many BJP supporters, leaders and pro-BJP journalists have been sharing misleading posts, unverifiable pictures and inflammatory rumours with a communal slant. There is a stark contrast between the reactions of the BJP leaders and the leaders of the other parties.

Though the go ahead from the environment ministry’s expert appraisal committee (EAC) for the entire Central Vista redevelopment project, which includes the new Parliament Building, 10 buildings as part of a Common Central Secretariat (CCS) and a massive conference centre, costing Rs 13,450 crore came late last month, the minutes of the meeting were made public on Monday. After receiving the approval, the CPWD floated the tender for the first three CCS buildings.

In West Bengal, while TMC won a landslide victory of 213/294 seats, the BJP won 77. In Assam, BJP made a successful run for a second term in office winning 60/126 seats while in Tamil Nadu, DMK registered an impressive win of 133/234 seats dethroning AIADMK. In Kerala, LDF made history by coming back to power for a second consecutive term beating the four decades of alternating power between LDF and UDF. In Puducherry, AINRC is set to form the government in alliance with the BJP.

For the first time in 40 years, Kerala may break the cycle of voting out the incumbent party as the final trends and data by the election commission indicate a victory for the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government with the CPI-(M)-led alliance securing a lead in 94 seats.
