Widespread complaints by BCM sport enthusiasts who were either barred from using East London’s Absa and Jan Smuts Stadiums, or were charged exorbitant fees to do so, should soon be a thing of the past. The metro has finally signed a 20-year lease agreement with Chippa Training Academy — just over two years after the council approved the long-term leasing of the two stadiums, which are adjacent to each other, to Chippa United football club boss Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi.

Leasing stadium to Chippa has 'killed athletics in our city'

The Border-Kei Chamber of Business has raised concerns about the leasing of a BCM sports stadium to Chippa Holdings, pleading with the municipality to review its decision, which it said was crippling sports activities in the metro. The chamber, in a recent letter to mayor Xola Pakati, claimed the leasing of East London’s Jan Smuts Athletics Stadium to Chippa United FC boss Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi for the next 20 years, has literally “killed athletics in our city”.

The decision raised eyebrows as the Belgian was fired with immediate effect by Tanzania Premier League side Yanga Africans in July last year for calling the club's fans “illiterate and monkeys”.
Safa registered their unhappiness with Mpengesi's decision in a statement issued after the confirmation of Eymael's appointment.
The mother body said at the time they would write to the Minister of Home Affairs to express their objection to the granting of a work permit for Eymael. Safa also said they would also request the Ethics Committees of Fifa and Safa to "charge Mr Eymael as his despicable conduct is a violation of the codes of both bodies.”

Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi has pulled the trigger again and fired coach Dan Malesela.
The Chippa United coach was sacked a day after the Port Elizabeth club were handed an embarrassing 5-1 thumping by Maritzburg United in a league match on Saturday night.
Malesela was on the team bus with his players on the way to the airport when TimesLIVE contacted him on Sunday morning and he confirmed that his stay at the Eastern Cape side had come to an abrupt end.
