Scotland 24-27 Ireland: Six Nations 2021 – as it happened

Full-time! Scotland 24-27 Ireland
Ireland win! Heartbreak for Scotland, who battled back into that match in impressive style from 14 points down. But Ireland just had too much in the end - they had the composure and the desire to close it out. Scotland’s lineout malfunctioned badly, particularly in the first half, and that factor alone has probably cost them the match. It was a very, very physical encounter and Ireland’s muscle threatened at one point to overwhelm Gregor Townsend’s men. But in the end there was only a penalty between the sides - a superb effort by Johnny Sexton who held his nerve and kicked his side to a win that sends them second in the Six Nations table.

ANDY FARRELL SAYS he will “do the right thing for Irish rugby” when it comes to making any decision about joining Warren Gatland’s coaching ticket for this year’s scheduled British and Irish Lions tour.
Farrell was a member of the Lions coaching teams in 2013 and 2017, and has been linked with a role in Gatland’s set-up again ahead of the planned summer Tests against the Springboks.

A FRESH ERA began in Rome on Saturday, helped by the return of an old face. While debutants Craig Casey and Ryan Baird stole the headlines, the image of a 28-year-old getting his international career back on track also felt like a new beginning.

YOU MAY HAVE heard, Ireland’s attacking game isn’t quite firing on all cylinders at the moment.
We’ve yet to figure out why exactly that is the case. The coaches say the onus on the players to think smarter on the pitch. The players, for their part, say they believe in what the men with the clipboards and whistles are preaching.

IT IS HARD to fathom how an Ireland backline littered with so much talent has looked so toothless recently, the reward for all that possession against Wales – with only 14 men – and France a return of just two tries, the lowest tally of any team in the Six Nations so far.
More concerning is that for all the talk of missed opportunities, they haven’t exactly left a bundle of scores behind them. The coaches have put that down to poor decision making and communication. The message from above is clearly that it is the players who need to step up and deliver.

ROBBIE HENSHAW SAYS Ireland need to become more clinical after they were left wondering what could have been for a second week running.
Ireland enjoyed the bulk of the possession but struggled to create scoring opportunities as they slumped to back-to-back Six Nations defeats with a 15-13 loss to France at the Aviva Stadium, their sole try coming courtesy of substitute Ronan Kelleher, who made the most of a spilled lineout to gobble up the loose ball and sprint clear.
