The Connected Society Innovation Fund for Rural Connectivity, which is funded by UK aid from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), was set up to expand digital inclusion in rural areas through innovative technology solutions. In this blog series, we will hear from the grantees and mobile operators about the journey from application stage to providing connectivity to up to 50,000 people in rural Ghana and Uganda. Read part 1 of the series

Sub-Saharan African has a network problem. Approximately a quarter of its 1.1 billion inhabitants live in communities beyond the footprint of any mobile broadband network. This makes it the largest region of unconnected people in the world, far above the Middle East and North Africa (9 per cent outside of mobile network coverage) or South Asia (6 per cent).[1] The simple fact is that the infrastructure does not exist, and it is not economical to utilise traditional towers found in urban areas, leaving these people behind in the global digital evolution. Mobile network operators (MNOs) also miss out on revenues from hundreds of millions of new customers.

The Connected Society Innovation Fund for Rural Connectivity, which is funded by UK aid from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), was set up to expand digital inclusion in rural areas through innovative new technology solutions. We are delighted that the partnerships between MTN Uganda and iSat Africa, and Vodafone Ghana and NuRAN Wireless, have now brought life-enhancing mobile coverage to up to 50,000 people in several deep rural communities through this project. Below we detail why the Fund is so important and the successful solutions.

NuRAN comes back from near death financial experience to implement its first network as a service contract with Vodafone in Ghana | Balancing Act

NuRAN comes back from near death financial experience to implement its first network as a service contract with Vodafone in Ghana
NuRAN has come out of the financial valley of the shadow of death to announce its first network as a service implementation with Vodafone in Ghana. Russell Southwood spoke to Francis Letourneau, CEO, NuRAN about the company’s new direction.
Newly minted network as a service provider NuRAN Wireless has announced its first contract for seven sites in Ghana with Vodafone. Two weeks ago the first site went live and the others will follow.
The Covid-19 pandemic has slowed down progress on the implementation, as it has been both difficult supplying goods and getting people to go to the site. As a result, it has been just over a year since NuRAN won a GBP330,000 grant as the winner of the GSMA Connected Society Innovation Fund for Rural Connectivity to carry out the work. It will be used to “to test and evaluate their new, innovative mobile internet connectivity solution for unconnected rural communities in Ghana”.
