Clampdown on protests negates democracy - Punch Newspapers

Punch Newspapers

Published 15 June 2021
FOR the umpteenth time, the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has demonstrated its characteristically strong but disturbing disdain for the democratic rights of Nigerian citizens to peaceful protest. This is as heavy police deployments disrupted the June 12 protests at different venues across the country as Nigeria marked Democracy Day 2021. The irony is unmistakable. On a day chosen to mark democracy in the country, the Buhari regime came out charging at the citizens expressing their inalienable right, deploying heavily armed police personnel and armoured personnel carriers to intimidate the protesters, condoning off protest venues, hounding and beating up protesters in the process.

Victims Of Chemical Attacks In Syria File Complaint With Swedish Police

Card image cap

Years after initial human rights violations in 2013 and 2017 respectively, lawyers from four non-governmental organizations are filing a criminal complaint to the Swedish police regarding the chemical weapons attacks on Syrian civilians. The Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM), Civil Rights Defenders, Syrian Archive (SA), and the Open Society Justice Initiative (OSJI) are specifically pointing towards the use of sarin gas in Ghouta in 2013 and Khan Sheikhoun in the Idlib province in 2017. The accusation comes while similar complaints arise in both France and Germany.
“Swedish authorities can join their counterparts in France and Germany to…demonstrate that there will be no impunity for the perpetrators of these crimes,” said Steve Kostas, a lawyer for the Justice Initiative. The Syrian government, however, denies ever using chemical weapons against its own civilians. “Sweden can and should contribute to putting an end to the current state of impunity in Syria,” Hadi al-Khatib, founder and director of the Syrian Archive, said in a statement according to Al Jazeera. He continues, “by filing the complaint, we want to support the victims’ struggle for truth and justice.”

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Lawyers representing victims of chemical weapons attacks in Syria filed a criminal complaint with Swedish police on Monday, calling for an investigation into the role of officials in President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
Allegations of war crimes can be investigated by Swedish police regardless of where they were committed.
Similar legal actions, taken by groups such as Civil Rights Defenders, the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression, Syrian Archive, and the Open Society Justice Initiative on behalf of victims have already been launched in Germany and France.
“The groups call on Swedish judicial authorities to open an investigation into these attacks, so that Syrian officials responsible for these war crimes can be put on trial under the principle of universal jurisdiction,” the groups behind the legal action said in a statement.

A group of 46 nations called Tuesday on member states of the global chemical weapons watchdog to diplomatically rebuke Syria for using toxic gas and nerve agents in the country’s decade-long civil war.
French Ambassador Luis Vassy proposed stripping Syria of its voting rights at the annual meeting of members of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
“We owe this to the Syrian people,” Vassy said.
The proposal, which has support from countries that include the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia, is expected to be put to a vote Wednesday morning.
Vassy said Syria’s use of prohibited chemical weapons was “irrefutable,” and he urged OPCW member states to back his attempt to strip Damascus of its rights, saying “we cannot let indifference win.”
