UCLA gymnastics have continued to impress the world, and Nia Dennis’ recent routine celebrating #BlackExcellence was no exception.
Her viral floor routine has prompted responses from Michelle Obama and Janet Jackson, a routine which saw Dennis perform in a blue leotard to an upbeat mashup of Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Missy Elliott, Megan Thee Stallion, Soulja Boy and Tupac Shakur in a dual meet against Arizona State. The piece was immediately praised as a tribute to Black Excellence, an impressive routine which boasted an important message and a huge double backflip just months after a shoulder surgery and a COVID-driven hiatus from training!

Update, Feb. 10: A previous version of this article did not credit Hallie Mossett for her choreography contributions and work on viral routines from 2018 and 2020. This post has been updated to reflect her contributions.
Not all floor routines in NCAA gymnastics go viral, though they should (maybe I'm biased). Many that have garnered massive attention in recent years come from UCLA. For instance, there was Hallie Mossett's 2017 Beyoncé routine, then Katelyn Ohashi's for the next two years — and Mossett actually had a hand in creating Ohashi's 2018 routine as a UCLA undergraduate assistant coach and choreographer that year (she now works as an assistant coach and choreographer at Long Island University). In 2020, there was that foreboding performance from Gracie Kramer, which showcased Mossett's choreography along with that of current UCLA choreographer and volunteer assistant coach BJ Das.
