Lakeith Stanfield: 'I don't hold anything back' | Lakeith Stanfield

Imagination, energy and a surrealist streak have made Lakeith Stanfield one of Hollywood’s most unusual – and sought-after – stars. Here, he talks about his toughest role yet

To spread the word about his anarchic, brilliantly batshit 2018 comedy
Sorry to Bother You, the actor Lakeith Stanfield adopted an anarchic, brilliantly batshit strategy. He went to one of his favourite stores, Iguana Vintage Clothing, in Los Angeles, and cleared out every wig they had. Then he drove around cinemas in Hollywood, bought tickets for the film, stashed them inside the wigs, and hid them outside the cinemas.

With the Super Bowl behind us and the Oscars looming (and a pandemic-dampened Valentine’s Day as a marketing peg), American distributors are releasing their most robust slate of new releases in months this weekend.
Awards contenders “Judas and the Black Messiah” (about the FBI-sanctioned murder of Fred Hampton) and “Land” (starring and directed by Robin Wright) arrive in theaters, hot off their premieres at this year’s virtual Sundance Film Festival. Also on the awards-worthy indie front, A24 releases last year’s Sundance winner “Minari” on demand. Steven Yuen stars in this immigrant story with universal appeal. And if theaters are open (and safe) near you, consider catching Michelle Pfeiffer in the wickedly funny “French Exit.”

The Future of Hollywood Belongs to Lakeith Stanfield

Film critics like to take pride in clairvoyance. The ability to watch an unknown actor in a breakout performance and instantly call a lifetime of fame and success — like Babe Ruth pointing his bat past the outfield in self-assured prophecy — is the easiest way to prove that we know a star when we see one. In recent weeks, I’ve spoken with a handful of peers who also remember playing Tinseltown executive upon seeing Lakeith Stanfield’s big-screen debut in 2013’s indie drama
Short Term 12 (then credited as “Keith”), chomping our imaginary cigars and growling, “That kid’s got a future in this business!” The number of my colleagues who arrived at this same conclusion does have a diminishing effect on the prescience of our insights, though. He made it too easy to tell he’d be huge.

Steven Yeun never felt quite as safe anywhere else as he did at church.
Looking back at his childhood in suburban Michigan, the 37-year-old actor realizes he hasn't been able to re-create that sense of security, either. At his Korean church, he knew who his friends were. He could express himself by playing guitar and singing. He even acted in skits, a skill he didn't pick up again until joining college improv, from where it would shape his career trajectory.
