Academics protest plan to give ministry more control

Academics protest plan to give ministry more control
Al-Fanar Media.
“The new draft law establishes a contracting system to regulate the relationship between professors and their university, subjecting it to the logic of the market and privatisation in a way that undermines the principle of academic freedom and the independence of scholars,” said Jaouad Rabaa, a member of the National Office for the independent Karama (‘Dignity’) Coordination of Research Professors, in a phone call.
Rabaa, a professor of political science and constitutional law at the University of Ibn Zohr in Agadir, explained that the draft law granted “supreme” authority to the university’s administrative body and the ministry to control teachers’ financial benefits and work privileges. The bill also grants the ministry of higher education powers to amend the curricula and intervene in research professors’ work, says Rabaa.

The 10th of December 2020 is now a memorable day for many Moroccans and Israelis alike. On that day, then-President of the United States of America, Donald Trump made an important announcement. He declared on his official Twitter account that both America’s strategic allies, Morocco and Israel, will establish full diplomatic relations. For Moroccans, this resumption of official contacts between Morocco and Israel also came with the US recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over its Sahara.

Contract teachers clash with Moroccan police as they pile pressure on authorities

In Rabat, Morocco, contract teachers continue to mount pressure on authorities to give them permanent employment status.
In addition to this, the teachers have for weeks been campaigning for integration with the national civil service.
They have embarked on strikes and protests, and the silence of authorities is infuriating them.
On Wednesday, one of such protests led to a clash between the teachers, their supporters and the Moroccan police.
Despite a ban on gatherings over the coronavirus, the teachers would have none of it.
"Unfortunately, you can see the repression that we are suffering today in the face of the silence of from Ministry which refuses to dialogue with us. They have recently brought in the program for professional qualification which we completely reject because we want to be under the supervision of the Ministry of Education and not of the academies", said Taha Wadani, a teacher from Salé.

Abu Dhabi’s Green List as opened up opportunities for international spring vacays…
They say ‘the world is your oyster’ and whilst we have a true pearl in our host city Abu Dhabi, international travel options have felt a little more shell-like in the global pandemic.
Closed borders and lengthy quarantine requirements have meant that hopping on a plane for a quick holiday has been a distant dream for most. But thanks to Abu Dhabi’s Green List, there are two destinations you can currently get to with no quarantine on either side of your trip.

“Some say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice. I say the darker the flesh then the deeper the roots.”
– Tupac Shakur
The newspaper on a bench at the entrance to the Lis Maternity and Women’s Hospital, in Tel Aviv’s Sourasky Medical Center, caught my eye. I picked it up and opened it to page 2. “Look,” I said to my mother. She blinked for a moment, not understanding. “Ah,” she cried out, surprised, and repeated my name apprehensively, as though its appearance in a newspaper rendered it foreign and she was trying not to mispronounce it. She looked pleased, but that didn’t draw us any closer. On the contrary: The permanent distance we carried with us everywhere like a moveable abyss, forged by an abundance of biographical details, became more concrete.

Moroccan authorities have discovered a new strain of the coronavirus, a member of the state-run scientific and technical committee for managing coronavirus announced yesterday.
Azzedine Brahimi reported that the new strain had appeared in "the Ouarzazate province only," adding that it had "no effect on either the spread of the virus, or the severity of the disease after infection or the immune response."
"Most infections in Morocco belong to the original coronavirus and the mutated variant discovered in Britain," Brahimi said on Facebook.
