So today I have had:
a txt alert 10 min after the local Tsunami Sirens started in my Community, about a half hour after the last quake that put my region in harms way. Excellent work
a txt alert once it was deemed safe to return home, gratefully received.
a PM begin a PRESS Conference (not a Covid briefing) of all the days happenings detailing some of todays important issues
an announcement of the carefully thought out by experts decision to complete the full 7 days lockdown as advertised (some people criticised the shortness of the previous 3 day lockdown)
Some people just love a good cheese with their half empty WHINE.

UBI experiment success

More evidence that UBIs work
The report is back on another Universal Basic Income trial, this time in the USA. And as with the others, it shows that this policy works:
After getting $500 per month for two years without rules on how to spend it, 125 people in California paid off debt, got full-time jobs and reported lower rates of anxiety and depression, according to a study released Wednesday.[…]
When the program started in February 2019, 28% of the people slated to get the free money had full-time jobs. One year later, 40% of those people had full-time jobs. A control group of people who did not get the money saw a 5 percentage point increase in full-time employment over that same time period.

Cricklewood 3
Have to say the recent comments from Jacinda regarding calling out those not following the 'rules' is a miss step I know she said to do it nicely etc but from what I've seen today at least some people havent seen that part.
Saw someone getting really nasty to a stranger at countdown and the calls to punish the rulebreakers are I think counterproductive.
All it will achieve is a climate of fear where people refuse to talk for fear of being singled out. Its completely counter productive.

Agree. I think the messaging from the PM has been off point in 2021. I’m surprised given it was very clear in 2020.

Frist –
The government has distributed Covid Cash to employers with gay abandon – not so fast Hoss please hold your horse.
You actually have to fill out forms, provide all business and employee details for every employee for which you then get a set amount depending on the criteria and besides in order to get that sweet sweet easy Covid Cash you actually have to prove to have lost quite a bit of business before Grant Robertson is happy to part with what he seems to consider his money. So much so that many businesses in NZ only received the original payment for lockdown l4 that was handed out to pretty much every one in NZ. Never mind, blame everyone for the big businesses that did not need it but took it anyways.

No Right Turn: Give the Rangitata back

Idiot/Savant at No Right Turn wrote on Thursday:
An irrigation company’s decision to relinquish its consent to take extra water from the Rangitata River when in high flow has been hailed as a “gift to New Zealand” by anglers.Rangitata Diversion Race Management Ltd (RDRML) was awarded the consent to take an extra 10 cumecs in water when the river was flowing 110 cumecs or higher by an Environment Canterbury-appointed independent panel in 2018.
However, appeals by Fish and Game, Ngāi Tahu and Te Rūnanga o Arowhenua to the Environment Court had delayed the consent’s implementation.
RDRML chief executive Tony McCormick confirmed on Tuesday it had decided to relinquish the consent, describing it as “positive news” and adding they would make a further statement later.

Level 3 again … be kind

Auckland is back into level three lockdown.  The check points around the city have again been put in place and big events, including the round the bays run have been cancelled.
The caution is understandable.  The latest two cases, a son and his mother, were potentially exposed to the UK variant B117 thorough a family member who was a casual contact of the Papatoetoe student.  This shows how dangerous the virus is and why the cautious approach is the right thing to do.
There has been some social media blow back, and pointed words from the Prime Minister, against the young man for going to a gym after having had his covid test.  From Jason Walls at the Herald:

Trigger-happy people are dangerous, guns shoot people and males get high on guns more than females. Police tried the careful approach to a guman in Aramoana and lost out.
There has to be a better program for these 'lost boys' sent away from home by the sleazy-peazy Australian government wanting to slide out of their failures to integrate people. We are much the same here, but we haven't the option to pass the parcel. So let's have a sensible program, and give them something to ground them here, ability to turn their lives around and have a regular earning job and still keep in touch with there. Perhaps if the rehab was successful some returnees could help in working with our crims here on the basis 'If I can remake my life so can you'. And bring in a visa system so we can keep track of what goes from here to there and vice versa. It would help if we knew how much vice is travelling over the Tasman!

An Aucklander who spent six minutes at a store where a Covid-19 case was working had to wait nearly eight hours on the phone to get advice from Healthline.
Even if this item isn't correct in every detail it illustrates cracks in the Covid management policy widening. Are front-line workers being properly paid and rested? Are investigators really on top of their job keeping up with the urgency needed, that was shown earlier on? NZ can't afford to be complacent. Recently one student was phoned a number of times without success, and a visit to the house wasn't made. In the meantime the virus was being spread.
