The Latest: US 7th Fleet: 14,000 personnel fully vaccinated
PHILIPPINE SEA — The U.S. 7th Fleet that operates throughout the Indo-Pacific says more than 14,000 of its service members have received their full doses of the coronavirus vaccine, which it began administering on January 5.
“We are in a pandemic and our principle weapon for ending this and saving lives is the vaccine,” vaccine coordinator Capt. Joseph F. Penta was quoted as saying in a news release. “We owe it to ourselves, our family and country to make every effort to stop the pandemic.”
Receiving the vaccination was voluntary and medical personnel were on hand to answer any questions about the process, the release said.

The Latest: Quebec imposes earlier curfew for Montreal

By The Associated Press
MONTREAL —- The Quebec government is imposing an earlier curfew for Montreal and the suburb of Laval as it tightens COVID-19 restrictions for the second time in three days because of a third surge of coronavirus infections fueled by more contagious virus variants.
Premier Francois Legault announced that beginning Sunday, people in Montreal and Laval will have to remain at home from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. or face fines of more than $1,000 Canadian (US$800).
Last week, Legault placed Quebec City, Levis and Gatineau under the earlier curfew, advancing it from the previous 9:30 p.m. start. The government also closed schools and non-essential businesses in those three cities for at least 10 days, and Legault announced Thursday that those measures would be prolonged until April 18.

Immigrant aid, lifeguard shortage, Frontier Days: News from around our 50 states

Immigrant aid, lifeguard shortage, Frontier Days: News from around our 50 states
From USA TODAY Network and wire reports
Alabama
Birmingham: The city on Tuesday extended a mandate requiring face masks in public to slow the spread of COVID-19, even as the statewide mandate expires. The City Council voted to extend the mask requirement through May 24. The decision came the same day the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Alabama will receive $44 million to expand vaccination efforts. Alabama ranks last in the country for the percentage of people who have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, according to CDC data. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said the mask ordinance is needed because COVID-19 continues to be a health threat, and most people in the city and the state have not been fully vaccinated. Woodfin said many local businesses also urged the city to keep the mask ordinance in place. “We will continue to make decisions that we believe will save lives. They may not be popular,” Woodfin said. The mayor urged people to “continue to do their part” during the “fourth quarter of this global health pandemic.” Although Gov. Kay Ivey’s statewide mask order expires Friday, health officials are urging people to voluntarily wear masks.

Notre Dame to require COVID-19 vaccinations for the fall

Notre Dame to require COVID-19 vaccinations for the fall
April 8, 2021 GMT
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The University of Notre Dame says it will require all students to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 for this year’s fall semester.
University officials notified the campus community of the requirement in a letter Wednesday. It says it will accommodate documented medical or religious exemptions to vaccinations.
“Requiring students to be vaccinated for COVID-19 is a new and important addition to our health policies, one that we believe will enhance public health at Notre Dame and in our community, while also contributing to our ability to return to a more vibrant campus environment,” university President Rev. John Jenkins said.
