Abarth 1000 SP: what is it?
The Abarth 1000 SP (Sport Prototipo) is a one-off homage to the car that made its debut 55 years ago and won the Nürburgring 500km in 1966.
It was initially designed to compete in both, endurance races and hillclimbs and enjoyed success as in various motorsport disciplines.
The retro-styled concept takes the form of a midsized sportscar and is larger than the original, but it features several nods to the original design. Lightness, agility and aerodynamic efficiency were key to the style.

One-Off Abarth 1000 SP Is An Alfa Romeo Underneath

It pays homage to the Abarth 1000 SP race car.
Fiat's performance Abarth division no longer sells any vehicles in the United States, but the Italian brand still has a selection of hot 500 models on sale in Europe. Abarth has a rich heritage of road cars and race cars, so it decided to celebrate the latter with a special one-off creation. Based on the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, this one-of-one vehicle pays homage to the Abarth 1000 SP (Sport Prototipo) that won the Nurburgring 500 km 55 years ago in 1966.
The original Sport Prototype used an Abarth twin-cam engine based on the Fiat 600. It only produced 105 horsepower, but the minuscule 982-cc engine boasted off-the-charts specific output (horsepower per liter). Plus, the twin-cam unit could rev to 8,000 rpm, and it only had 480 kg (1,058 lbs) to lug around. Top speed was an impressive 136 mph.

Abarth Made A One-Off 1000 SP Roadster Based On Alfa Romeo's 4C

These days the Abarth name is relegated to signposting the performance versions of Fiat’s 500 and 124 Spider sports cars. But back in the 1950s and 1960s Abarth was ticking off race wins all over Europe with its combination of tuned Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and even Porsche power units, and lightweight hand formed body panels.
And now the 1000 SP (Sport Prototipo), one of the greatest of those race winning cars, has just been reimagined for 2021. The Stellantis press release doesn’t go into too much technical detail about the car, but it gives us enough to work out what’s under the skin.
