House Passes Bill to Protect Inspectors General From Political Retaliation

WASHINGTON (CN) — The House passed H.R. 2662, a bill granting protections to inspectors general from political retaliation, with a 221-182 vote late Tuesday.
The bill requires lawmakers to investigate any wrongdoing against inspectors general, provides a thorough removal process for when an inspector general is terminated for cause, and requires the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency to report its activities to Congress and the president, among other provisions.
U.S. Representative Carolyn Maloney introduced the bill in April. “The work of inspectors general, who conduct independent oversight of federal agencies continues to be a remarkable investment for American taxpayers,” the New York Democrat said during a House debate on Tuesday. “For every dollar we spend on IGs, we get $17 back. And this return could be even higher if we gave IGs additional tools, which is exactly what this bill would do.”

State Department watchdog says Pompeo, wife violated ethics rules

WASHINGTON — The State Department’s internal watchdog has concluded that former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his wife violated federal ethics rules by asking staffers to run personal errands and perform non-official work such as making restaurant reservations, shopping and caring for their dog.
In a report released on Friday, the department’s inspector general concluded that those requests were “inconsistent” with the regulations. But, because Pompeo is no longer a federal employee and not subject to federal disciplinary or other measures, it did not call for any action against the former secretary who left office on Jan. 20 at the end of the Trump administration.

"There will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration," Pompeo said in an at times testy news conference when asked about contacts with the Biden team. Pompeo spent $10k on engraved pens for notorious "Madison Dinners" - CREW | Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spent more than $10,000 in taxpayer funds on engraved Madison Dinner-branded pens that he gifted to attendees of the notorious dinner parties, according to records obtained by CREW in an ongoing Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. The guests included high-profile Republican donors, who could be politically useful if Pompeo runs for office in the future. This new disclosure brings the total amount of taxpayer funds spent on the dinners to at least $50,000, several thousand more than previously reported.
The new records reveal that the pens, which were custom-embossed with Madison Dinner logos, cost the Department at least $10,433 for a total of 400 pens.

CREW Reports Mike Pompeo Madison Dinners Details, Connection to Inspector General Steve Linick Fiing

Jessica McGowanGetty Images
One hesitates to paraphrase the genius of Robert Earl Keen, but it seems the grift goes on forever and the thievery never ends. The folks at CREW got their hot little hands on some of the financial details describing how high Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been living on the hog belonging to the rest of us.
Started by Pompeo in 2018, the Madison Dinners are a series of lavish events organized in part by his wife through her personal email account and funded by taxpayers. The dinners’ connection to the mission of the State Department is highly questionable, as only 14 percent of invitees reportedly have been diplomats or foreign officials. The vast majority have been from the private sector with no connection to the State Department’s foreign policy mission, such as Republican donors and conservative media figures. At the time of the Madison Dinners, Pompeo appeared to be using government resources elsewhere to support a potential run for Senate in his home state of Kansas. President Trump fired State Department Inspector General Steve Linick as he was investigating allegations of significant misconduct by Pompeo. Linick reportedly made an inquiry into one of the offices responsible for arranging the Madison Dinners the week before he was fired. CREW filed a criminal complaint against Pompeo, calling for the FBI to investigate whether Pompeo obstructed the investigations into him by pushing Trump to fire Linick.

State watchdog finds Susan Pompeo traveled without proper certification
The State Department's watchdog on Thursday released a report that found travel by Susan Pompeo, who is married to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, failed to receive the proper certifications on numerous occasions.
The investigation was initiated by a whistleblower complaint in October 2019 but is part of a larger controversy surrounding the role of Susan Pompeo and alleged efforts by the secretary to disrupt investigations by the inspector general.
Two acting inspector generals, Stephen Akard and Matthew Klimow, recused themselves from the review of Susan Pompeo's travel and the report was completed by Deputy Inspector General Diana Shaw, who took over the investigation amid a shakeup in the Office of Inspector General (OIG).
