Round 9 of the NRL prompted much discussion about the handling of foul play.
The Eels-Roosters clash on Friday night led to suspensions for Parramatta’s Marata Niukore and Dylan Brown for incidents in one passage of play leading up to halftime.
The failure to follow due process in the handling of Brown’s ugly knees-first effort on the Rooster’s Drew Hutchison, including a 20-minute delay in putting Brown on report, saw bunker official Steve Chiddy dropped. At the time of the incidents Niukore was penalised and placed on report. Neither player was sin-binned, something NRL head of football Graham Annesley has since stated both incidents warranted.

"Where not only poor judgement has applied but also where standard processes haven't been followed, then there has to be some consequences for that," Annesley said.
"At an absolute minimum, the players should have been sent to the sin bin because that then activates the potential for the 18th man.
"In the case of the tackle on James Tedesco, he didn't leave the field, he continued to play on, so it wouldn't have applied in that case, but in the other case it could have applied.
"The incidents themselves, they should have been placed on report and sent to the sin bin. Sending off as the final step is also something that could have been considered.

As a result, the match official in question, Steve Chiddy, has been pulled from his duties for the Broncos - Cowboys game tonight and replaced by Chris Butler.
"Referees Coach Jared Maxwell and I spoke at length immediately following the game last night," Annesley said in a statement released by the NRL this morning.
"While we cannot comment about specific incidents which may be subject to the match review process, more generally, Jared and I were extremely unhappy about a number of decisions which occurred throughout the game. As a result, the bunker officials involved, who were due to officiate again tonight, have been replaced.

The NRL has reacted swiftly to the officiating howlers in Friday night's Eels-Roosters match by axing the bunker officials who failed to act on a number of controversial incidents.
NRL head of football Graham Annesley said he was "extremely unhappy" with several decisions from the bunker, led by senior review official Steve Chiddy, adding that their performance "did not meet our expectations".
