"As the U-Haul approached a curve in the road, it failed to negotiate the turn and went over the edge, landing in the Little Calumet River," police said.
The incident began around 4:10 a.m. Wednesday when Hammond police were notified by its license plate recognition system of a stolen U-Haul in the city, police said.
Hammond police are investigating the shootings and urge anyone with information to contact detective Dan Drudge at 219-852-2990.
Hammond police believe the vehicle traveling east crossed the center line and hit a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction Saturday morning.
"At the time of the officers’ arrival, the suspect was not present at the scene," police said.
